Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is beyond any skepticism that, the purpose and development of science is a subject matter of argument in this day and age. The notion that, the most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives is highly debatable partly because of the numerous rationales on both sides of this bitter controversy. I, for one, firmly stand in favor of the aforementioned statement as do countless experts in this subject matter.

To commence with, let us focus on the thoughts which impelled me to support this dispute. First and foremost, science has improved people’s health and increased life expectancy by developing effective medicines and medical technologies. Research shows that scientific discoveries have helped doctors prevent and treat many serious diseases. To illustrate, vaccines, antibiotics and modern medical equipment have saved millions of lives and helped people live healthier lives. In addition, scientific research has made medical treatment more accurate and accessible in many parts of the world. For example, modern scanning machines allow doctors to identify diseases at an early stage and provide appropriate treatment.

Moreover, science has made everyday life easier, safer and more convenient for people. Modern scientific inventions have improved communication, transportation and household activities. For example, smartphones and the internet allow people to communicate with others within seconds, even when they live in different countries. Furthermore, scientific developments in transportation have made travelling faster and more comfortable. These improvements demonstrate that science can play an important role in solving people's daily problems and improving their overall quality of life.

To recapitulate, I would like to restate my position supporting this issue. Considering all the fiercely logical and unyielding explanations with substantial/statistical examples outlined in this essay, my original feeling has just been calcified.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout the essay. The stance that the most important aim of science is to improve people's lives is well supported by logical arguments concerning health, life expectancy, and everyday convenience. For example, the writer cites specific illustrations such as 'vaccines, antibiotics and modern medical equipment' and 'smartphones and the internet.' The ideas are well extended and supported, fulfilling the Band 7 requirements for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each body paragraph focuses on a distinct sub-theme, moving smoothly from health benefits to everyday technological conveniences. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to connect ideas, although some introductory phrasing feels slightly overly verbose or mechanical at times (e.g., 'To commence with, let us focus on the thoughts which impelled me...'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, satisfying the Band 7 criteria.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, employing less common lexical items such as 'life expectancy', 'rationales', 'accessible', and 'unyielding'. However, there are occasional awkward collocations and overly dramatic phrasing for an academic essay, such as 'bitter controversy' and 'my original feeling has just been calcified' (where 'calcified' is incorrectly used to mean solidified or reinforced). Despite these minor lexical inaccuracies that hint at over-reliance on memorized templates, the vocabulary is adequate for a Band 6.5, rounding to 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with generally good control. The writer successfully employs relative clauses, conditional ideas, and participial phrases (e.g., 'Research shows that scientific discoveries have helped doctors prevent and treat many serious diseases'). Punctuation is generally sound, though there is an unnecessary comma splice in the opening sentence: 'It is beyond any skepticism that, the purpose...'. The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, allowing for clear communication and fitting comfortably into the Band 7 descriptor.
