IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In today's modern world, science has become significant element to increases individual well- being. I strongly agree with that statement due to numerous advantages offered by science or scientific research.
Firstly, scientists are working in labs from past decade in search of better lead optimization of medicaments or drugs, to ensure patients safety and reduce the adverse drug reactions. some researchers had discovered new molecules which has a better binding with the ligand which ensures the lead optimization and supports the drug discovery as well as safe drug delivery to patients by which patient safety is likely to be ensured. For instance, modification had done on some vaccines of corona virus, then one lead vaccine was manufactured which have less side effects.
Secondly, science has become beneficial for the farmers also by providing them insects repellents, new machinery which provides adequate amount of water in the crops. Moreover, researchers investigated a seed storage container which grows the seed more rapidly, which reduces the time for crop growth and development inside the soil. Due to these initiatives farmers are earning a handsome amount.
To conclude, I strongly believe that science has positive impact on individuals life and enhancing the standards of life. researchers are concluding research from decades to provide patients safe medicines and ensure the patients safety and well- being. likewise, farmers are making hefty profit just because of technological advancements provided by the science: insects repellents, seed storage devices and machinery which ensures the water levels are being maintained for the better growth of crops.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Overall | 5.5 |
Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and consistent position that the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as medical research regarding drug safety and technological advancements in agriculture like insect repellents and seed storage devices. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise and some explanations feel slightly repetitive, which prevents the ideas from reaching the highest levels of development. For instance, the discussion on drug optimization circles back to patient safety multiple times without introducing new main points. Nevertheless, a clear overall position is maintained throughout, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating medical science and agricultural advancements into distinct body paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. Words like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' are used, but transitional phrases within paragraphs can feel abrupt or repetitive, such as the frequent restarting of sentences with 'moreover' or 'due to these initiatives'. Referencing is not always clear, particularly in complex medical sentences where pronoun reference and clause connections become tangled. Overall, the logical progression is clear enough to follow, matching the Band 6 descriptors well.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student attempts less common vocabulary with varying degrees of success, displaying an adequate range for the task. Words and phrases like 'lead optimization', 'adverse drug reactions', and 'technological advancements' show a commendable attempt at topic-specific lexis. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'significant element to increases individual well- being' instead of 'an element to increase', and 'medicaments' which is overly formal or awkward in this context. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'corona virus' as two words and 'insects repellents' instead of 'insect repellents'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer successfully attempts relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'researchers investigated a seed storage container which grows the seed more rapidly'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('become significant element'), subject-verb agreement ('molecule which has', 'vaccine which have'), and tense consistency ('researchers are concluding research from decades'). Punctuation is also occasionally weak. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede overall communication, allowing the reader to grasp the intended meaning. This aligns well with the criteria for Band 6.0.
