Student answer (Band 5.5)

Science and technology has made peoples live a better place. Although it has some major drawbacks but most of them are advantages .Most people think that the main purpose of science should be to improve peoples lives. I strongly agree with this statement because scientific progress can improve healthcare and make everyday life easier and solve major global issues.

Firstly, one of the greatest contributuion of science is the improvement of healthcare. Scientific reaserch has helped everyone to develop medicines, vaccines and other major medical treatments like chemo therapy. As a result, many diseases can now be prevented or treated easily and effectively .For example , by using vaccines doctors treated many dangerous viruses and protected millions of people from being ill and from being dead. These medical treatments has helped many poor families to get medical help. It is now very easy to determine what disease one has by scientific methods and treatments ,as a result , people can be concious about their health hazards from the beginning,

Secoundly, science has made our daily life very easy and convinient.Development in technology have changed the way of communication, study and work. The internet, smartphone, computer and modern transportation has allowed people to complete tasks more quickly and stay connected with the whole world.AI develpoment is the most life changing discovery of science, with the help of AI students can know more about their studies.

However, scientific research does not always need to be more benefitial for the normal people. Research into space, physics or other areas may initially appeare to be unknown to normal people, but such discoveries can eventually feel more usefull .Therefore, scientists should also have opportunities to explore new ideas.

In conclusion, i strongly agree that the most important aim of science should be to improve peoples lives.Although some research may not have immediate practical benefits ,but scientific progress should ultimately contribute to human health and make peoples lives better in future

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on the given statement and supporting it with relevant ideas. The writer takes a strong stance in agreement and extends this with arguments related to healthcare improvements and daily convenience. There is also a brief acknowledgment of fundamental research in the fourth paragraph, which demonstrates an attempt to explore the broader implications of science. However, some arguments lack deeper development and tend to over-generalize, such as the broad claim about AI development and education. While the ideas are relevant, further elaboration on specific mechanisms or examples would elevate the content. Overall, the task is successfully addressed, meeting the criteria for Band 6.5, which rounds to a solid 6.0 based on the balanced delivery of main points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to divide distinct points, such as healthcare in the second paragraph and daily life in the third. However, cohesion is at times faulty and mechanical, seen in phrases like 'Firstly, one of the greatest contributuion' and 'Secoundly, science has made'. Referencing can also be unclear, and transitional links between sentences are occasionally abrupt. Logical progression is present, but the overuse or awkward placement of basic sequencing devices keeps the essay in the Band 6 territory. Improving the flow between complex ideas would enhance cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'contributuion' (misspelled), 'convenient', and 'concious'. There are several spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'peoples live', 'reaserch', 'chemo therapy', 'benefitial', and 'appeare'. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the intended meaning remains clear. The student demonstrates sufficient lexical flexibility to discuss scientific and daily topics, but the noticeable spelling slips and occasional awkward collocations prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. For instance, the writer successfully employs conditional and relative clauses, such as 'Although it has some major drawbacks but most of them are advantages' (which also contains a redundancy error with 'although' and 'but'). There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing commas, spacing issues around punctuation marks, and subject-verb agreement issues like 'These medical treatments has helped'. However, these errors rarely impede communication. The control of grammar is generally acceptable for a Band 6, showing intermittent control over complex structures.
