IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In several countries, a steady research, by individuals, about the history of the apartments, buildings, or homes they live in, has become a popular demographic trend. Humans are often curious about the history of their accommodated places just to gain knowledge and to become aware of their traditions. I believe this aim can be achieved by getting information from our elders and finding some books related to the history of that specific town they live in.
In different parts of the world, people are increasingly becoming interested in the backstory of their homes. People who love historical study, often get curious about reasons behind constructing their homes. In this modern era, where everyone is busy in their daily routines, knowing the background of their homes, gives a sense of elegance and creates a feeling of heritage. For instance, statistics show that most of the recent searches by young people online are about the towns in which they reside. For all these reasons, individuals study the background history of their homes to become well acknowledged.
The immediate resource for this sort of research is getting information from our grandparents, as they can provide us with quality information. Our elder parents often tell us real stories about why and how they took residence or created their houses. Additionally, some of the local libraries can also be widely useful for this purpose because they offer us thousands of history books related to their towns. To conclude, to keep pace with the the generational knowledge, people can ask their parents and can check whether their nearby libraries can provide information about this.
To sum up, from my perspective, people often get interested in the domestic history to develop awareness and to create a sense of heritage. This can be achieved either by asking grandparents or searching the town libraries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The candidate has completely misunderstood the prompt, writing about people researching the history of their homes rather than discussing whether the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives. According to the band descriptors, a response that is largely off-topic fails to address the core requirements of the task. Although the student provides a clear position and supportive ideas regarding domestic historical research, the content does not align with the provided prompt on science. Consequently, Task Achievement is severely limited by this topic deviation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
Despite the off-topic content, the essay demonstrates a recognisable structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as the reasons for researching home history and the resources available. Cohesive devices are employed, including phrases like 'For instance,' 'Additionally,' and 'To conclude,' although referencing is occasionally repetitive. There is a logical progression within paragraphs, showing an overall arrangement that aligns with Band 6 descriptors for cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'demographic trend,' 'backstory,' and 'generational knowledge.' However, there are noticeable word-choice inaccuracies and slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'steady research' and 'elder parents.' Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede overall communication. This places the lexical performance comfortably within the Band 5 to Band 6 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'In this modern era, where everyone is busy in their daily routines, knowing the background...' However, there are persistent grammatical errors throughout the text, including article misuse ('the the generational knowledge') and prepositional errors ('research, by individuals'). While these errors occasionally cause minor awkwardness, they rarely impede comprehension, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6 grammar.
