Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response is severely under-length, containing only 191 words compared to the required 250 words. As explicitly instructed, this failure to meet the minimum length requirement directly penalises the Task Achievement score. While the writer attempts to present a position regarding whether science should improve people's lives and touches upon both sides of the argument—such as medical advancements during the pandemic and potential environmental drawbacks—the development of these ideas is notably truncated and incomplete. The conclusion is left unfinished. Because the response lacks the necessary length to fully develop a well-supported argument and fails to reach the word count, it aligns closely with the Band 4 descriptors for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates some basic organizational structure with attempts at paragraphing and transitional phrases such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclosion'. However, the overall progression is heavily disrupted by the extremely short and unfinished nature of the text, particularly the abrupt ending in the final paragraph ('In conclosion,'). Cohesive devices are used rather mechanically and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in vague pronoun usage like 'They thick that science will damage the nature.' Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph consists of only two incomplete words. These features place the response firmly at Band 5 for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and basic, with frequent spelling and word-choice errors that occasionally impede communication. Examples of errors include 'modrren' instead of modern, 'desaster' instead of disaster, 'viriuses' and 'virius' instead of virus, 'Colaps' instead of collapsed, 'vacine' instead of vaccine, 'industriallition' instead of industrialization, 'wast' instead of worse or vast, and 'conclosion' instead of conclusion. While the writer attempts some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'economy', 'antidote', and 'temperature', the high frequency of basic spelling mistakes and imprecise word choices restricts the score to a Band 4.5, rounded to 4.5 or 5.0. Given the persistence of errors, Band 4.5 is most accurate, represented here as a Band 5.0 for the minimally adequate range of familiar topics.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a mix of simple sentence forms alongside some attempts at complex structures, such as relative clauses ('physics is a branch of science which we can use'). However, grammatical accuracy is very poor, with frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, articles, and tense consistency. Examples include 'science improves the living standards individual', 'there are many branch of science', 'the scientist experience on different thing', and 'the smoke came from factories will rise the temperature every yeay.' Punctuation and capitalization errors are also prevalent throughout the text. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect the Band 5 descriptor level.
