Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, science and technology have become widely discussed issues. While some people believe that science and technology are beneficial and make our lives easier, others argue that they create a number of problems. This essay will discuss both perspectives and explain why I believe that science and technology make our lives easier.

One major reason why science and technology are important in our daily lives is that digital technology, such as smartphones and televisions, has made many activities easier. Smartphones play an important role in our lives because we can easily communicate with our family and friends. This means that people nowadays can communicate with others even when they live far away. In addition, modern technology has improved medical treatment. For example, telemedicine allows patients to receive medical advice and treatment without travelling to a hospital. As a result, science and technology have become very important in our daily lives.

On the other hand, some scientific and technological developments can make our lives more complicated. The main reason for this is that children nowadays spend too much time using technological devices, such as tablets, televisions and smartphones. As a result, some children become addicted to these devices and cannot give their full attention to their academic studies. In other words, excessive use of technology can affect people’s mental health and make them less active. Furthermore, many people now depend on machines and artificial intelligence to complete tasks that humans used to do themselves. Consequently, excessive dependence on technology can have negative effects on individuals and society.

In conclusion, although science and technology can create some problems, I believe that they have more benefits than disadvantages. They can make our daily lives more productive by improving communication, education and healthcare. Since the world is changing rapidly, science and technology will continue to play an important role in our lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both sides of the issue (whether science should primarily improve lives versus creating problems) and clearly states their personal position in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant, such as mentioning smartphones and telemedicine for benefits, and digital addiction and environmental or machine dependency for drawbacks. However, the arguments remain somewhat general and lack deeper extension or more sophisticated support. For instance, the discussion on medical treatment or children's addiction touches on valid points but does not fully explore the broader societal or philosophical implications of scientific prioritisation. This places the response comfortably at Band 6.5 to 7.0 for Task Achievement, demonstrating a clear position and well-structured ideas throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs representing contrasting viewpoints, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently'. However, paragraphing and referencing can feel a bit mechanical or repetitive at times, as seen with phrases like 'One major reason why science and technology are important...' and 'The main reason for this is...'. There is an overall logical progression, but the links between sentences occasionally rely on formulaic transition words rather than seamless integration of ideas. This matches the Band 6.5 to 7.0 descriptors for logical organisation and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases such as 'telemedicine', 'medical treatment', 'addicted', and 'artificial intelligence' show a suitable command of topic-specific le زا. However, the vocabulary tends to be somewhat repetitive, relying frequently on standard terms like 'science and technology', 'daily lives', and 'make our lives easier'. While there are attempts at less common vocabulary, control is not fully consistent, and precision could be elevated. Spelling and word choice are accurate and never impede communication, aligning the response well with Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a commendable mix of simple and complex sentence forms. Examples such as 'While some people believe that science and technology are beneficial and make our lives easier, others argue that they create a number of problems' and 'Smartphones play an important role in our lives because we can easily communicate with our family and friends' show good control over subordination and relative clauses. The majority of sentences are grammatically sound, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. While complex structures are occasionally repetitive in their framing, errors are rare and do not interfere with understanding. This level of control comfortably supports a Band 7.0.
