Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives. A position is presented, stating that science makes life easier and more productive. However, the development of ideas is heavily hindered by severe language limitations and lack of clarity. While some relevant points are mentioned, such as digital technology improving communication and healthcare, the supporting arguments are repetitive, poorly articulated, and frequently drift into tangential complaints about children and addiction. Consequently, the ideas are under-developed and difficult to follow consistently. Based on the official descriptors, this performance aligns with a Band 4.5, but is awarded a Band 5.0 for attempting to address all parts of the prompt with a discernible position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The essay is divided into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing some basic structure. However, there is a distinct lack of clear overall progression, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by broken sentences and fragmented thoughts. Cohesive devices are used very mechanically or are inaccurate, as seen in repetitive transitional phrases like 'As a result' and 'For instance'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs fails because sentences do not link together logically. Referencing is frequently unclear, particularly with pronouns like 'it' and 'this'. This level of organizational control and cohesive failure corresponds to a Band 4.0 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The student's vocabulary is extremely limited, highly repetitive, and marred by persistent word-choice errors. The key term 'science' is systematically misspelled as 'since', which severely impacts comprehension throughout the text. Other vocabulary items are misused, such as 'improdent rule play our hole life' and 'Tealimadicin'. The range is barely adequate to communicate simple ideas, and errors cause considerable strain for the reader. There is no evidence of less common lexical items used accurately. This performance fits squarely within the Band 4 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mainly of simple structures and frequent failed attempts at complex sentences. Almost every sentence contains major grammatical errors, incorrect word forms, missing verbs, or severe punctuation issues. Examples include 'while some people believe that since is good and make easy life' and 'they can not full attention Academic study'. Errors are so frequent that they constantly distort meaning and cause severe difficulty for the reader, placing the response at a Band 4.0 level.
