Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is believed by a few individuals that it is the most important aim of science that to improve people's lives. In this essay I will explain why I agree with this statement.

On the one hand, some people believe that science should improve people's lives. It is important aim of science. In this contemporary era, many people survive without basic facilities. They have to deal with difficulties. Some people also suffer from illness because they do not have knowledge about health. They were uneducated due to some reasons. some people have financial problems and also in some cities there was no education system. Moreover, if science take sufficient steps fom them so they can also grow in their lives. Science should have to installed technologies for which they can gain knowledge free of cost. No doubt, many helpful technologies was invented by many inventors but there prices was very high for which some people cannot get advantages of this technologies.

On the other hand, if science improve people's lives this world would be much better than today. Science should have to improve agriculture such as irrigation system and croping system. Science should also have to improve electric system such as they should have to installed solor system in the parts country where people have to suffer against electricity. Also, science should improve medicine system for which some people suffer.

In conclusion, I highly agreed with this statement that it is most important aim of science should to be improve people's lives so that they can live without any difficulty.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position of agreement, stating in the introduction that 'I will explain why I agree with this statement.' However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed, which keeps the response at this level. While the writer touches on relevant issues like basic facilities, healthcare knowledge, agriculture, and electricity, these points are repetitive and lack detailed expansion or specific examples from personal knowledge. For instance, the discussion on education and poverty in the second paragraph jumps between different problems without fully elaborating on how science directly solves each specific issue. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to extend and support ideas with more specific explanations and concrete examples rather than relying on generalised statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation present, with a clear attempt at paragraphing into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the text, as ideas tend to loop or repeat without a smooth logical flow. Cohesive devices are used rather mechanically and inadequately, with excessive reliance on simple connectors like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover'. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'if science take sufficient steps fom them so they can also grow', where pronoun referencing becomes vague. To improve cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive ties more naturally and ensure that each sentence leads logically and progressively into the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer demonstrates a basic working vocabulary with words like 'facilities', 'difficulties', 'illness', and 'agriculture', but struggles with accurate word choice, collocation, and word forms. There are noticeable errors such as 'croping system', 'medicine system', and 'electric system' instead of 'cropping systems', 'medical systems', and 'electrical systems'. Furthermore, phrases like 'if science take sufficient steps' and 'prices was very high' indicate word form and agreement issues that stem from lexical control limits. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of less common lexical items with greater precision and awareness of natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic clauses. When attempts are made at complex sentences, they are frequently faulty, leading to noticeable errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement. Examples of frequent errors include 'it is the most important aim of science that to improve', 'if science take', 'there prices was', and 'science should have to installed'. Punctuation and article usage are also inconsistent throughout the essay. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the grammar score. To progress, the writer must practice forming complex sentences accurately, paying closer attention to auxiliary verbs, tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement.
