IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Improving people's life should be the main objective of science. Whether it be engineering, medical or any type of sciences I strongly agree with this statement.
Firstly, scientific research and discoveries are carried out to benefit human in a way or another. Scientists from engineering and environmental sciences are working mutually in order to minimize the carbon footprint resulting from fuel consumption. This can cause severe climate changes that can affect humans and cause health problems. Thus, the scientists from both the fields are trying to develop ways through which we can avoid fossil fuels. For example, renewable sources like water, sunlight and geothermal energy are being utilised in order to conserve environment that in turn benefits human beings.
Secondly, governments are becoming active in funding scientific projects more than ever before. Modern technology like artificial intelligence, internet of things is being developed in partnership with governments. Moreover, students from relevant educational background are receiving massive scholarships and professionals are receiving trainings. Furthermore, this technology itself can help humans in almost all of their tasks. For instance, from making a reference report to designing a complete website this can help on every step simplifying the problems humans encountered previously.
In conclusion, developments in science are improving human lives by helping minimizing their environmental concerns contributing towards their better life style. Additionally, new expeditions in technology are making life easier by assisting them in problems they may encounter in daily life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position that science should primarily aim to improve people's lives, and relevant ideas are presented. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the minimum two hundred and fifty-word limit, containing only two hundred and forty words. Furthermore, some ideas are under-developed or lack full extension. For instance, while the writer mentions how engineering and environmental sciences work to minimize carbon footprints, the explanation remains somewhat generalized rather than fully explored with specific, deep argumentation. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is fully satisfied and extend each main idea with deeper analysis, fully developing every supporting point provided.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas across paragraphs. The introduction sets out the writer's stance, body paragraphs examine different facets of the argument, and a conclusion summarizes the points. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are utilized to guide the reader through the text, although referencing is at times slightly mechanical or formulaic. For example, the transition from government funding of projects to the benefits of technology could flow more smoothly. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response. To progress further, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between sentences is seamless and unobtrusive rather than relying on predictable transition markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating central ideas about science, technology, and environmental conservation. There are clear attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'carbon footprint', 'geothermal energy', and 'artificial intelligence'. However, there are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies that reflect a lower band boundary, such as 'Improving people's life' instead of 'lives', and 'sciences' treated incorrectly in phrases like 'any type of sciences'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to demonstrate a more precise control of word choice and collocations, utilizing uncommon lexical items more naturally and avoiding minor slip-ups in plurals and noun forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and participial phrases, as seen in 'renewable sources like water, sunlight and geothermal energy are being utilised in order to conserve environment'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('conserve environment' instead of 'conserve the environment') and occasional awkward punctuation or phrasing like 'this can help on every step simplifying the problems'. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of simple structures are accurate. To move up to a higher band, the writer must display greater control over complex sentence patterns and produce a higher frequency of completely error-free sentences, particularly regarding article usage, prepositions within grammatical patterns, and punctuation.
