Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, agreeing that the main aim of science is to improve lives. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as advancements in medical treatments for diseases like diabetes and heart attacks, as well as the introduction of modern technologies like artificial intelligence tools. However, some ideas are under-developed and lack extension. For instance, the mention of Isaac Newton and gravity is introduced abruptly without clearly connecting it back to how everyday human lives are practically improved. Similarly, the reference to AI platforms is somewhat superficial. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to fully develop all main points with deeper explanations and more robust supporting examples rather than relying on brief lists of diseases and technologies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the writing is divided into logical paragraphs. However, cohesion is at times mechanical and repetitive, relying heavily on formulas like 'To begin with,' 'Additionally,' and 'Firstly,' 'Secondly.' Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the transition phrases used to link sentences in the body paragraphs. Paragraphing is present, but the internal progression within the body paragraphs feels disjointed due to sudden shifts between ideas, such as moving from medical conditions directly to Isaac Newton. To achieve a higher band, the writer must use a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally, ensuring smooth logical transitions and clearer progression from one idea to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary items such as 'gravitational force' and 'technologies.' However, there are noticeable word-choice, collocation, and word-form errors throughout the text. Examples include writing 'object of science is make efficent to people's lives' instead of 'make people's lives efficient,' 'science is keep improving in every sectors' instead of 'sectors,' and spelling errors like 'diabities,' 'convinient,' and 'desicion.' These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to expand their control of less common lexical items, ensure correct word forms and derivations, and eliminate spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses ('which will make more efficient') and conditional elements. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, articles, prepositions, and verb forms that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of grammatical inaccuracies include 'science is keep improving' (incorrect verb tense construction), 'treat the health disease' (article and pluralisation issues), and 'It also ensure that how to treat' (subject-verb agreement). Punctuation and structural control are inconsistent. To progress to a higher band, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free sentences, improve control over verb tenses and agreement, and refine complex sentence structures for greater accuracy.
