IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.5)
The principal purpose of science should be to enhance the quality of human life. I largely agree with this view, as scientific progress has transformed healthcare, communication and living standards. Nevertheless, I believe that expanding human knowledge should also be considered an important objective of scientific research.
The most compelling reason to prioritise human well-being is the profound impact science has had on healthcare. Medical research has resulted in vaccines, antibiotics, sophisticated diagnostic equipment and treatments for previously incurable diseases. For instance, advances in medical imaging, such as MRI and CT scans, enable doctors to identify serious conditions at an early stage, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful treatment. Such developments demonstrate that scientific knowledge can translate directly into longer and healthier lives.
Furthermore, science has substantially improved people's standard of living. Innovations in computing, telecommunications and renewable energy have made education, employment and communication more accessible while addressing some of the environmental challenges facing society. The widespread availability of the internet, for example, allows students to access educational materials and attend courses regardless of their geographical location. Similarly, developments in solar and wind technology are helping societies reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.
However, it would be misguided to judge every scientific endeavour solely by its immediate practical benefits. Fundamental research often seeks to answer questions about the universe without any obvious application. Research in astronomy and theoretical physics, for example, may initially appear unrelated to everyday concerns, yet discoveries arising from such work can eventually lead to valuable technological innovations. Consequently, allowing scientists to pursue knowledge for its own sake can produce unforeseen benefits in the long term.
In conclusion, improving human lives should undoubtedly be regarded as a central aim of science because its applications can address pressing social, medical and environmental problems. However, fundamental research is equally valuable because today's seemingly abstract discoveries may become tomorrow's practical solutions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response covers all parts of the task very well, presenting a clear, well-developed position throughout. The writer addresses the prompt by discussing the primary importance of improving human lives through science, while thoughtfully extending the argument to acknowledge the value of fundamental research, as seen in the discussion of theoretical physics and astronomy. Ideas are well supported with relevant, specific examples, such as MRI scans and telecommunications. To reach the highest descriptor level, the discussion could occasionally delve even deeper into the philosophical implications of scientific progress without relying on standard real-world examples, ensuring every single point is pushed to its absolute maximum analytical depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
Ideas are logically sequenced, guiding the reader smoothly from the introduction through well-supported body paragraphs to a balanced conclusion. All aspects of cohesion are skillfully managed, utilising sophisticated transition signals such as 'Nevertheless', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently' without making them feel mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic. The progression of thought is clear throughout. To move towards an even more effortless flow, cohesive devices could occasionally be varied with more subtle referencing techniques rather than standard transitional adverbs, although the current implementation is already exceptionally strong.
Lexical Resource: Band 8.5
The writer demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary with skilful use of uncommon lexical items such as 'sophisticated diagnostic equipment', 'indispensable', 'profound impact', and 'fundamental research'. Word choice and collocations are handled with a high degree of precision, and spelling is flawless. Occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice are virtually absent. To attain the absolute highest tier, the writer could incorporate even more idiomatic language or nuanced academic collocations, though the current lexicon is already mature and appropriate for advanced academic writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.5
A wide range of complex sentence structures is used flexibly and accurately throughout the response. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, demonstrating excellent control of subordinate clauses, conditional elements, and precise punctuation. Verb forms and tenses are handled faultlessly across different time frames, as demonstrated in 'discoveries arising from such work can eventually lead to valuable technological innovations'. There are only very occasional, negligible awkwardnesses. To maintain absolute perfection, the writer could integrate even more ambitious syntactic inversions or absolute phrases, although the current grammatical variety is already extremely high.
