IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Science plays a crucial role in shaping modern society. Some people believe that its primary purpose should be to improve people’s lives. I strongly agree with this view because scientific research can solve practical problems, improve health, and make everyday life safer and more convenient.
First of all, science has significantly improved human health and increased life expectancy. Medical researchers have developed vaccines, medicines, and advanced treatments for many serious diseases. For example, vaccines have helped control diseases that previously caused millions of deaths. In addition, modern medical technology, such as MRI scanners and robotic surgery, allows doctors to diagnose and treat patients more effectively. Therefore, using scientific knowledge to protect human health should be considered one of its most important purposes.
Science also makes people's daily lives easier and safer. Technological developments based on scientific research have transformed communication, transportation, education, and household activities. For instance, the internet allows people to communicate and access educational resources from almost anywhere in the world. Similarly, advances in renewable energy can help reduce pollution and provide cleaner sources of electricity. These examples show that science can directly address social and environmental problems.
However, improving people's lives should not mean that scientific research must always have an immediate practical benefit. Scientists also conduct research simply to understand the universe, nature, and human beings. Many discoveries that initially appeared to have little practical value later became useful in medicine or technology. Nevertheless, even this basic research can ultimately contribute to human progress.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that improving people's lives should be one of the most important aims of science. Although gaining knowledge is also valuable, scientific discoveries have their greatest social value when they contribute to better health, greater safety, and a higher quality of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response covers all parts of the task well, presenting a clear and well-developed position throughout. You state your strong agreement in the introduction and maintain this stance consistently. Your ideas are well extended and supported with relevant examples, such as medical research, vaccines, and the internet, which illustrate how science improves daily life. Furthermore, you show good critical thinking in the fourth paragraph by acknowledging that basic research without immediate practical benefits still ultimately contributes to human progress. This nuanced handling of the prompt allows the response to cover the topic thoroughly and well, leaving only minor scope for further exploration of alternative viewpoints to reach the highest level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Ideas are logically sequenced and flow naturally from one point to the next, demonstrating clear overall progression. You use cohesive devices appropriately and effectively, such as 'First of all', 'In addition', 'Similarly', and 'However', which guide the reader smoothly through your arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt, including health, daily convenience, and basic research. Referencing is clear throughout, and transition sentences between paragraphs link the various ideas together well, ensuring that the structure remains coherent and easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suitable for an academic discussion. Less common lexical items are used with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'shaping modern society', 'life expectancy', and 'technological developments'. Word choice is generally precise, and spelling is accurate throughout. While the vocabulary is adequate to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively, incorporating a few more sophisticated, idiomatic, or less common academic phrases could elevate the lexical range even further. Overall, the vocabulary choices do not impede communication and successfully support the arguments presented.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
The response features a wide range of sentence structures, utilizing both simple and complex forms with a high degree of control. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showcasing complex noun phrases, subordinate clauses, and varied verb tenses. Grammatical structures such as conditional-like nuances, relative clauses, and modal verbs are handled accurately. Punctuation is used correctly to separate clauses and items in lists. Only very occasional minor slips occur, but these do not detract from the overall impressive grammatical control demonstrated across the entire essay.
