Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing that the primary aim of science is to improve human life. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as advancements in healthcare, transportation, and daily luxuries, satisfying the main requirements. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the paragraph listing various benefits tends to pile up assertions—such as mentioning diagnostic equipment, commute methods, environmental problems, and food quality in rapid succession—without sufficient explanation or concrete examples for each point. The personal example provided at the end helps support the position, but it remains somewhat generalized. To reach the next level, the writer needs to select fewer ideas and explore them more deeply with specific, well-elaborated examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance stated at the outset and reiterated in the conclusion. Paragraphing is utilized to separate the introduction, the body discussion, the personal example, and the conclusion. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical and repetitive, particularly through the excessive reliance on phrases like 'It has made' and 'It has provided me with' to begin consecutive sentences. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of varied transitional devices and smooth paragraph transitions means the progression of ideas can feel formulaic. To improve, the writer should employ a wider variety of cohesive devices and vary sentence openings to create a smoother, more natural flow between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items related to science and daily life, such as 'advancements', 'diagnostic', and 'transportation'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors, such as 'equpments' (equipment) and 'sciene' (science), alongside awkward word choices and collocations like 'food qualities' and 'means of commute'. These inaccuracies do not heavily impede communication, but they restrict the range and precision of the response. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, ensure correct word forms and pluralization, and focus on natural collocations while eliminating basic spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses such as 'people who used to first walk to work or home'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present throughout the text, including article omissions and preposition errors, such as 'With the advancements in the technology' and 'reasons of how'. Additionally, sentence structures occasionally become run-on or repetitive in their syntax. Despite these errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning generally remains clear. To progress further, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over complex sentence patterns, refine article usage, and ensure greater accuracy across various grammatical structures.
