Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt regarding whether the main aim of science should be to improve human lives by taking a clear, albeit basic, position in agreement. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed, which places the score at this level. While the writer attempts to support the argument with examples such as agriculture, medicine, and the COVID-19 pandemic, these examples lack sufficient elaboration and clarity. For instance, the mention of historical childbirth challenges and the pandemic touches upon relevant points, but the explanations are muddled and fail to fully explore the extent to which improving lives is science's primary role. To move up, the writer needs to extend and support arguments with deeper, well-reasoned explanations and more cohesive examples that directly relate to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text demonstrates some overall organization, attempting an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but it lacks a clear and logical overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, yet the internal structure of the paragraphs is weak, with ideas jumping abruptly between topics like agriculture, maternal mortality, and aviation without smooth transitions. Furthermore, cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as using 'On the other hand' incorrectly to introduce a supporting point rather than a contrast. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen with ambiguous pronouns like 'they' and 'it'. To achieve a higher score, the writer must ensure a logical flow of ideas from sentence to sentence and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring basic and repetitive terms like 'science', 'good', and 'help'. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'verry interesting', 'pertinents argument', 'science invent the antidote', and 'vinicity'. Spelling mistakes also occur throughout the text, including 'heplps', 'anathesis', 'wherby', and 'crusial'. These errors and the restricted range sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, incorporate less common vocabulary with greater precision, and pay closer attention to correct word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic patterns. When the writer attempts complex structures, they are frequently faulty, leading to noticeable structural errors such as in 'Government should need to more investment in science study' and 'when a one country face a dysfunctional factors they helped us on this badly time.' Frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions are evident throughout the essay, which can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To improve, the writer should practice using a wider variety of complex sentence forms with better grammatical control and accuracy across different tenses and clause structures.
