Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main prompt regarding whether the primary aim of science should be to improve people's lives, taking a clear supporting position. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed throughout the essay. While the writer touches on valid points such as transportation, health sectors, and environmental benefits, these ideas lack full extension and deep explanation. For instance, the mention of electric vehicles and curing diseases is introduced briefly without sufficient supporting evidence or concrete examples from personal knowledge or experience, leaving the arguments at a generalised level. To move further, the writer needs to fully develop each main point with detailed explanations and well-elaborated examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation present in the essay, with attempts to separate ideas into distinct paragraphs using transitional markers like 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'Atlast,'. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the text, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by repetitive statements and abrupt shifts in thought. Cohesive devices are often inadequate or inaccurate, such as repetitive use of 'science should' and 'people life' which creates a mechanical feel rather than a smooth progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph cohesion suffers from unclear referencing and abrupt transitions, such as moving from healthcare costs directly into concluding thoughts without sufficient linking.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms like 'people life', 'science', 'make', and 'things'. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the response, such as 'Nowdays', 'thier', 'inventations', 'trasportation', 'vechiles', 'eltric', 'solars', 'heath', 'equipments', 'smptomps', 'hopless', and 'decrese'. These lexical errors and the limited range of vocabulary cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the precision of the argument. To improve, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire beyond basic terms and focus on accurate spelling, word formation, and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors when attempting complex or compound structures. There are persistent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, plurals, and punctuation, such as missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences ('Nowdays science...', 'i strongly agrees...'), missing apostrophes ('people lives', 'toss of paying too much bills'), and incorrect preposition use. For example, expressions like 'it should be able him to get cure' and 'they also has to work' contain fundamental agreement and structural errors. Frequent grammatical errors can cause difficulty for the reader, and a greater variety of error-free sentence forms is required for higher bands.
