Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response achieves a minimal level of engagement with the task, providing an opinion agreeing that the primary aim of science should be to improve human lives. However, the length requirement is not met, as the essay is well short of the 250-word minimum and trails off mid-sentence. Ideas regarding historical living conditions and technological advancements are limited and under-developed, lacking the comprehensive extension and supporting detail expected at higher levels. While the writer touches upon the prompt's theme, the partial development and truncated format constrain the overall response, addressing the task only partially.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The essay displays basic attempts at organisation, including an introductory paragraph and subsequent body paragraphs. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression and logical structuring. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes faulty, as seen in awkward transitions like 'On the hand' instead of 'On the other hand'. Referencing and logical connections between ideas are occasionally unclear, and the mechanical use of cohesive ties hinders smooth reading. Furthermore, the abrupt ending of the text prevents any effective concluding structure from being established, reflecting a restricted ability to manage information coherently.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, featuring basic terms suitable for expressing straightforward concepts. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the text, such as 'dicoveries', 'poeple', 'beacuse', and 'feilds'. The student attempts less common vocabulary, but these attempts often result in inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'economic stats'. While communication of the general topic is not entirely obscured, the frequent lexical errors and restricted range place the response firmly within this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex formations. Frequent errors in grammar, tense usage, articles, and verb patterns occur throughout the text, such as 'did not knew the things', 'the way of living people of had changed', and 'the buisness has made easy'. Punctuation and subject-verb agreement errors are also present. These frequent grammatical inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted control over sentence mechanics.
