Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response only partially addresses the prompt and fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, stopping abruptly at 102 words. While the introduction attempts to outline a position regarding whether the main aim of science should be to improve people's lives, the discussion quickly drifts into discussing educational development and a student workforce rather than maintaining a strict focus on scientific aims. Ideas are severely limited and under-developed due to the incomplete nature of the essay, preventing full exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organization apparent in the introduction and the start of a first body paragraph, using transitional phrases like 'On the one hand'. However, the abrupt cutoff prevents any clear overall progression or logical conclusion. Paragraphing is initiated properly, but the lack of a fully realized body and conclusion limits the use of cohesive devices and makes the overall arrangement incomplete.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'betterment of people's lives' and 'rapidly increasing scientific research'. There are a few lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'fundamently' (spelling) and 'prticularly' (spelling), along with minor collocation slips. However, these vocabulary errors do not severely impede communication, showing potential at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing shows a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'This essay will examine both the benefits and drawbacks of this situation before concluding...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, for instance, missing dependent clause structures like 'Some view this scientific shift is advantageous', but these errors rarely impede communication and the basic sentence structures remain functional.
