Student answer (Band 6.5)

Science has grown significantly in the past few centuries and has improved people's lives a lot in major aspects of lives. I partially agree that the most important aim of science should only be to improve people’s lives because science has answers for every problems which are cruicial to improve people's lives but sometimes the aim of scientific developments may not be directly to improve people's lives.

In recent decades, many scientific advancements have completely eradicated numerous human problems. For example, the communication science and radio-communication have made possible to exchange any information across the globe in a blink of an eye. The aerospace advancements in the early 20th century made air travel possible and because of that it is possible to reach any destination within few hours, nowadays. Many fatal diseases are now curable due to the significant discoveries made by scientists and researchers in the healthcare domain.

Many scientific efforts and investments for ambitious projects made in the past didn't have a direct aim to improve people’s lives such as the apollo missions on the moon by nasa or the development of nuclear warheads. However, they have indirectly solved many equations and therioes which are proved significantly helpful in other scientific domains. For example, because of advance research on nuclear energy to build defence equipments, engineers and scientists are able to make the nuclear power plants which can generate substantial amount of clean energy. The experience achieved by NASA in the apollo missions helped it to launch modern satellites successfully and efficiently using same rockets and propellers.

To summarise, a lot of scientific experiments can directly make people’s lives better while some scientific projects may not have a direct aim to improve people’s lives but eventually they do the same in indirect way in longterm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, acknowledging both direct and indirect aims of science. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as communication science, aerospace advancements, and NASA's Apollo missions. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in places, such as claiming that science 'has answers for every problems,' which keeps the response within the current level. The main arguments are well-supported, but certain points, particularly the discussion on indirect benefits, could be extended with even greater depth to move towards higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the essay. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, two distinct body paragraphs exploring different facets of the prompt, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to connect ideas, such as 'In recent decades,' 'For example,' and 'However.' While the logical flow is mostly clear, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical, preventing the text from achieving a more fluid and sophisticated level of cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating sufficient range to discuss scientific advancements with some flexibility. The writer attempts less common lexical items, such as 'eradicated,' 'aerospace advancements,' and 'defence equipments,' showing some awareness of style. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'communication science' instead of 'telecommunications,' 'every problems' instead of 'every problem,' and 'therioes' (spelling error). These occasional inaccuracies and minor spelling lapses are characteristic of this level, where communication is successfully maintained despite the lexical flaws.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'because of advance research on nuclear energy to build defence equipments, engineers and scientists are able to make...' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('on the moon by nasa'), article misuse ('in indirect way'), and prepositions. For example, writing 'in a blink of an eye' rather than 'in the blink of an eye' and minor subject-verb agreement slips. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the writer demonstrates a reasonable control of sentence structures overall.
