Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
First, it must be noted that this response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, containing only 140 words, which severely restricts the depth of the ideas presented. The essay responds to the task only minimally. While the writer manages to express a clear position regarding biotechnology and the role of science in improving human life, the ideas remain heavily under-developed and limited. For instance, the mention of a zoologist performing animal experimentation for medicine is introduced abruptly without sufficient explanation or connection to the broader argument about whether science's main aim should be improving lives. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to write a fully developed essay that explores multiple aspects of the prompt with extended supporting arguments and relevant examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The essay displays some basic organization, including an introduction and distinct body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas from start to finish. The progression feels disjointed because sentences are linked together mechanically rather than through natural logical flow. For example, the transition between discussing basic needs and introducing the zoologist example is abrupt and lacks cohesive signposts. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are too brief due to the overall short length of the text, preventing a smooth development of arguments. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that ideas follow a logical sequence and that appropriate cohesive devices are used to connect sentences and paragraphs more fluidly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'biotechnology', 'experimentation', and 'commercial needs', but these attempts are frequently marred by spelling errors and awkward word choices, such as 'vitalze', 'Emmerging technoloy', and 'fullfillment'. There are also issues with word form and collocation, such as 'effecting human nature' instead of 'affecting human life'. These noticeable errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a basic control of lexical features. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range and improve spelling and accuracy in word choice and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, while attempts at more complex structures are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage, such as 'As soon as technology is growing', 'Scientific resercehes are conducet', and the missing article in 'A Zoologist perform'. Subject-verb agreement issues are also present, such as 'Zoologist perform' instead of 'performs'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader in places. To move up to the next band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence forms with a much higher proportion of error-free sentences and better control over basic grammatical rules.
