Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, taking a clear stance on whether science should primarily aim to improve people's lives. Relevant ideas are presented, such as advancements in medical technology, life expectancy, clean energy, and time-saving innovations like online banking and smartphones. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full elaboration. For example, the point about reducing pollution through planting trees and waste management is abrupt and lacks specific explanation or connection to the prompt. While the main position is clear throughout, the development of supporting arguments remains uneven, keeping the response at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is present, though the grouping of ideas within paragraphs can feel disjointed, such as switching abruptly from time-saving devices to environmental protection in the third paragraph. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly placed, as seen with transitional phrases like 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'On the contrary', which do not always accurately signal the logical relationship between ideas. Referencing and progression between sentences occasionally lack smoothness, resulting in a somewhat choppy flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'life expectancy', 'innovations', and 'eco-friendly'. However, there are noticeable limitations and errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'questined', 'agee', 'detact', 'diseas', 'technogies', and 'arguements'. Some phrases are unidiomatic or awkward, such as 'science can provide natrual clean energy' and 'science improvements of people's lives'. While these spelling and word-choice errors occur frequently, they do not entirely impede communication, as the general meaning remains understandable to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are often affected by grammatical errors. There are frequent issues with verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as in 'science have most factors through change', 'scientific can innovation technogies for save time', and 'allows to individuals to manage money without of visiting bank'. Punctuation errors also appear, including misplaced commas and stray punctuation marks. Although these errors in grammar and punctuation are noticeable and persist throughout the text, they rarely completely impede communication.
