Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear stance that science should primarily focus on improving people's lives. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed, placing the response at this level. While the writer attempts to provide supporting points such as advancements in medicine, clean energy, and time-saving technologies, these points are often stated briefly without sufficient extension or deep elaboration. For instance, the mention of natural clean energy and waste management is introduced abruptly in the second paragraph without concrete examples. Similarly, the conclusion merely restates the student's position rather than synthesizing the main arguments effectively. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to fully extend and support each main point with detailed explanations and relevant examples rather than listing multiple ideas superficially.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates some overall organization with recognizable paragraph breaks, but it lacks a clear and smooth overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or mechanical. For example, transition phrases like 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'On the contrary' are used to link paragraphs, but the logical relationships between sentences within paragraphs are sometimes disjointed. In the second paragraph, the sentence starting with 'As science can refine...' is left grammatically incomplete and disrupts the flow of thought. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the concluding paragraph where 'They are not only easy to improve...' lacks a clear antecedent. To improve cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that every sentence connects logically to the one preceding it, building a stronger overarching argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items with noticeable errors that occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. There are frequent word choice and word form errors throughout the text, such as 'scientific can innovation technologies' instead of 'scientific and technological innovations', and 'businessess' with a spelling error. Phrases like 'most factors through change a group of individuals interests' lack clarity and precise collocation. While the writer demonstrates an attempt to discuss complex themes like healthcare, renewable energy, and employment, the lexical control is inconsistent. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range and improve accuracy in word formation, spelling, and collocation so that ideas can be expressed with greater precision and naturalness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing exhibits a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are persistent grammatical errors throughout the response, including issues with verb forms, tense consistency, and incomplete sentence structures, such as 'the foremost benefit of improving people life expectancy through science is.' Preposition and article errors are also common, as seen in phrases like 'without of visiting a bank.' These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and impede the clarity of the argument. To progress to a higher level, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures while significantly reducing the frequency of basic errors by paying closer attention to subject-verb agreement, clause construction, and punctuation.
