Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, science and technology have become major factors that have changed the way people perform their daily tasks. Science should mainly focus on improving people's lives. If questioned I strongly agree with this viewpoint. My position is elaborated further with reasons and examples.

*To begin with, one of the foremost benefits of science is that it can improve people's life expectancy.* As science can develop new medicines, vaccines, and medical technologies, it can help prevent diseases. For example, many hospitals can detect diseases more easily and quickly through modern medical equipment. *Moreover, science can provide clean energy and  better method of waste management.*

Furthermore, scientific innovations and technologies can save time and effort. Technologies such as smartphones, computers, and household machines make everyday tasks easier and more convenient. For instance, online banking allows individuals to manage their money without visiting a bank, which saves time and effort. In addition, people can reduce pollution and protect the natural environment by planting trees, reducing waste, and avoiding plastic materials.

Another important benefit is that scientific research supports and leads to new industries, jobs, and business opportunities. **By creating more jobs and encouraging product innovation, scientific research can help local communities improve their living standards and contribute to economic growth.**

In conclusion, Overall, I strongly believe that science should mainly focus on improving people's lives. Scientific developments can improve healthcare, make daily activities easier, protect the environment, and create employment opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear stance that science should primarily focus on improving people's lives. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the point regarding healthcare and life expectancy is supported effectively with examples like modern medical equipment, other points, such as clean energy and waste management, are left under-developed and stated merely as lists without sufficient extension. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains 238 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, moving logically from healthcare and time-saving technologies to economic growth. Cohesion within and between sentences is generally managed, featuring logical links like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesive devices occasionally feel slightly mechanical, pointing to the bridge between the current level and the next. For instance, transitional phrases are functional but do not always flow with complete naturalness, which prevents the essay from achieving a fully seamless progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas clearly regarding science and technology. There are attempts to use less common lexical items, such as 'life expectancy', 'innovations', and 'economic growth'. However, some word choice and collocation inaccuracies appear, such as 'better method' instead of 'better methods'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of sophisticated and flexible vocabulary with more precise control over style and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses effectively. There is a good variety of sentence types used throughout the response. Some errors in grammar and punctuation are present, such as pluralisation issues like 'better method', but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences are well-controlled. To move into the higher band, the writer would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and display tighter control over punctuation and grammatical agreements.
