IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Science is very important in the modern world. Many people believe that the main purpose of science should be to improve people’s lives. I largely agree with this idea because scientific progress has made our lives healthier and more convenient.
First of all, the most obvious aim of science is to protect human health. Medical science has developed a lot in the last century and made our lives better For example scientists found vaccines for dangerous diseases like smallpox and polio. Because of this, people do not die young anymore, and the average life expectancy has increased significantly around the world. This clearly shows that science aims to improve people's lives by reducing sickness and saving lives.
Secondly, science also focuses on making daily life easier. Technological inventions have changed the way we live and work. For instance, the internet and smartphones allow people to communicate instantly with their families. In the past, people had to travel long distances or write letters to talk to each other, which took a lot of time. Now, these problems are solved because science created new technologies to improve our life quality.
On conclusion, I agree that the most important goal of science is to improve people's lives. Although some scientific research is just for discovering knowledge, the practical results usually bring huge benefts to human society. Therefore, making life better should always be the main focus of sciencee

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that largely agrees with the statement. The ideas presented are relevant, focusing on health and daily convenience, but some of them remain somewhat under-developed rather than fully extended. Furthermore, it must be noted that the response falls short of the word count requirement, containing only 235 words instead of the minimum 250 words. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to fully develop every supporting argument with deeper elaboration and ensure the length requirement is fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from health to daily life. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct points. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'For instance', though some referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of cohesive relationships and ensure that progression between paragraphs flows even more naturally and flexibly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary items such as 'life expectancy', 'instantaneously', and 'practical results'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, spelling slips like 'benefts' and 'sciencee', and phrasing that prevent higher-level precision. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the limitations in lexical control. To improve in this area, the student needs to expand their range of less common lexical items, refine collocations, and practice careful proofreading to eliminate spelling errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses ('which took a lot of time') and conditional-like phrasing effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing terminal punctuation in 'better For example scientists' and slight prepositional or article slips, but they rarely impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are accurate. To reach the next level, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with a higher frequency of error-free sentences and tighter punctuation control.
