Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, agreeing that the primary aim of science should be improving lives while acknowledging secondary benefits like knowledge acquisition. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as medical advancements (vaccines and hospital equipment) and technological progress (aeroplanes and rockets), but some of these ideas are under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the mention of education in the second paragraph lacks specific support and remains vague. While the main arguments are identifiable, the extension of ideas tends to rely on generalisations rather than deep elaboration, placing the task response securely at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as practical benefits versus knowledge expansion. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical or disjointed, and referencing is not always clear. Cohesive devices are used, but their application is occasionally repetitive or clumsy, such as the frequent reliance on transitional phrases like 'First of all' and 'However'. Furthermore, internal cohesion within sentences can be faulty, which disrupts the natural flow of the argument and prevents the writing from achieving higher organisational clarity.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, showing an attempt to incorporate less common items relevant to science and technology, such as 'scientific discoveries', 'climate change', and 'antidots'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'treatmental items', 'imporving', 'gaol', and the misspelling ',ajor'. These lexical errors and awkward word choices do not completely impede communication, but they occur with enough frequency to restrict the score. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision in selecting academic vocabulary and improve control over word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as relative clauses and conditional ideas. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles, and plurals. Examples include 'the science play a vital roles', 'peoples live', 'people wants', and 'helps to people travel'. Punctuation errors and missing commas also detract from the overall control. While these errors rarely impede communication entirely, they are persistent enough to prevent a higher rating, as the majority of sentences contain noticeable slips in grammatical accuracy.
