Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position on whether science's main aim should be improving people's lives. Relevant ideas are presented, such as technological advancements in daily life and medical and biological research protecting health. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which places the response at this level. For instance, the discussion on mobile phones and the internet is expanded with clear examples, whereas the points regarding solar systems and chemical tests for building materials are somewhat under-developed and lack clear extension. To reach a higher level, every main idea needs to be fully elaborated with clear, relevant examples and deeper analysis throughout the entire essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, demonstrating an attempt to organise ideas into paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear, which keeps the essay at this band. For example, transition markers like "to begin with", "however", and "to encapsulate that" are used, but sentences within paragraphs lack smooth flowing links, and run-on sentences obscure the logical progression. Additionally, paragraphing is not used effectively; the second and third body points are compressed or awkwardly merged. To improve, you should ensure each main point has its own distinct paragraph and use a wider variety of cohesive devices naturally without over-relying on repetitive introductory phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing enough words to communicate the central arguments about science and technology. You attempt to use less common vocabulary items such as "multitudes", "advanced technology", and "biological", but there is noticeable inaccuracy in word choice, collocation, and spelling throughout the text. Examples of lexical errors include writing "scientist" instead of "scientists", "scince" instead of "science", "revelant" instead of "relevant", "imformation" instead of "information", and "dieseases" instead of "diseases". These errors and occasional inappropriate word forms do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. To move up, you need to expand your range of vocabulary, use less common items more precisely, and carefully check your spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting to connect clauses using conjunctions and relative structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and sentence boundaries that hinder fluency. Many sentences lack proper punctuation, resulting in long run-on structures without capitalisation or periods, such as the opening sentence and the entire concluding paragraph. Furthermore, there are errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as "scientist is working" instead of "scientists are working" and "living standard" instead of "living standards". While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from achieving a higher band. To improve, you must focus on controlling basic sentence boundaries, using correct punctuation, and ensuring subject-verb agreement.
