IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people think that improving the lives of people should be the ultimate goal of science. I fully agree with this opinion, as science has the potential to make our lifestyles easier and scientifc knowledge can improve our life expectancy.

Firstly, human comfort should be the ultimate priority of science, because it can increase the pace of our progress. The more we are free from the day to day activities, the more we have time to solve the mysteries of our universe. We are the only creature on the face of earth that has made it's task easier. And when we had freed ourselves from the little household activites, we shifted our focus towards the mysteries of other planets. For instance, at the dawn of 19th century, we transformed from an angricultural civlization to an industrial one. And in next hundred years, we are near to become a multi planitary civilization.

Secondly, the biggest desire of every biological creature is to live more and more and in the case of humanity that desire has the chances to be fulfilled. Scientists have already made the discoveries like antiobiotics and vaccines that have increased our lifespan already. The person living in 16th century, had very high chances of perishment by a mere prick of nail. Although, it does not feel real, but we have eradicated some diseases and we have given ourselves a better chance to live than our ancestor. And science can do a lot more in this regard. For instance, scientists are now working on the ways to reverse aging and if they become successful in it, we will fulfill the goal of our biology and that is survival.

In conlcusion, the best service that science can offer to humanity is improving its way of living, either by making our lives easier or by offering us more time to live. And it has the potential to do both.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear and consistent position that the primary aim of science should be to improve human lives. The ideas presented are generally relevant, covering both the concepts of making daily lifestyles easier and enhancing life expectancy. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the transition from an agricultural to an industrial civilization is somewhat generalized and only loosely tied back to the main thesis regarding comfort. To reach a higher level, the arguments require more rigorous extension and deeper supporting evidence, ensuring every point directly reinforces the central stance without drifting into historical narration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the two main supporting arguments into distinct body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are employed to structure the response, though referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical. For example, transitional phrases between sentences within the body paragraphs could flow more naturally. To achieve a higher standard, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices while ensuring referencing is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's core ideas. There are attempts to use less common items, such as 'civilization', 'antibiotics', and 'eradicated', showing an awareness of topic-specific language. However, the range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation, such as 'scientifc' instead of scientific, 'angricultural' instead of agricultural, and 'planitary' instead of planetary. Additionally, phrases like 'perishment' are unnatural in this context. To reach the next level, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire and exercise greater precision in spelling, word forms, and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses, such as conditional structures like 'if they become successful in it'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including article misuse ('at the dawn of 19th century'), pronoun errors ('it's task easier'), and awkward prepositional usage, but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To improve further, the writer should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine their control over articles and plurals to ensure greater grammatical precision.
