Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the 21st century, many people believe that improvement towards individuals life should be the most primary goal of science. I firmly disagree in the support of only giving importance toward enhancing human's lives, and this essay will support with relevant examples in upcoming paragraphs.

Several factors combine to ensure that prioritizing only on strengthening people's lives is not an ideal practice. The primary reason for this claim is that the aim of the science should also give importance to protecting environment and future generations. This can be understood by some scientists, they should study on climate change, biodiversity to preserve and pollution control. Also, they should restrict some human activities rather than directly making life more comfortable, which is essential for maintaining a sustainable planet. To illustrate this, researchers should put more efforts to generate more number of renewable sources of energy, which can indirectly help people by giving more conveniency in their daily transportation. Therefore, it is more practical to give same importance to other crucial matters of planet as enhancing human's lives.

Furthermore, the primary aim of science should not be limited to improving people's daily lives; it should also contribute to technology innovations. In explanation, researchers can lead to new technologies, industries and methods of productions. These trends could improve the productivity and create employment, even if the original research was not intended to improve people's quality of life. For instance, finding in artificial intelligence and robitics is helping companies automate complex and difficult tasks for human, increase productivity and develop new industries. Thus, technological progress should also be regarded as important objectives of science.

To conclude this discussion, many people believe that focusing on enhancing individual's living standards can have positive outcomes. however, my belief is that it is more necessary to give equal importance to the other factors rather than focusing primarily on the people's daily lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position throughout the essay regarding the multifaceted aims of science. The writer's stance is well maintained, and the main ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as discussing artificial intelligence and renewable energy sources. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as stating broadly that researchers should restrict human activities, which keeps the response at this level. To reach a higher standard, the ideas could be more fully developed with deeper analysis and more precise real-world examples rather than somewhat generalised assertions about technology and the environment.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the essay, with each paragraph having a distinct central topic. The writer uses cohesive devices flexibly, such as 'Furthermore', 'To illustrate this', and 'To conclude this discussion', though referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. To achieve an even higher band, the transitions between sentences could flow more naturally without relying so heavily on standard linking words, ensuring that cohesion feels entirely seamless and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'biodiversity', 'sustainable', and 'automation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocations, such as writing 'improvement towards individuals life', 'enhancing human's lives', 'giving more conveniency', and 'finding in artificial intelligence'. Additionally, there is a minor spelling error ('robitics' instead of robotics). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writer from demonstrating the precision and stylistic awareness required at higher bands. Using more precise collocations and checking word forms would elevate the lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied syntactic structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as 'prioritizing only on strengthening', 'the aim of the science', 'generate more number of renewable sources', and missing capitalization in 'however'. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they represent a recurring pattern of inaccuracy that impacts readability and places the essay at this specific level. Greater control over complex sentence patterns and article usage is necessary to improve this criterion.
