IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The most essential purpose of science should be directed towards improving people's lives. I agree with this view. This is primarily because improving people's lives would allow them to focus on doing things that matter to them and live a healthy life.
Improving people's lives would grant them freedom to focus on their careers without worrying about house chores or running errands. It would allow them to spend most of their time studying or working, thereby excelling in their careers. For example, science has introduced many smart house appliances over the years. These appliances help people with their house chores. The house cleaning robot cleans the floors while a dish washer can do the dishes. Hence, such applications have helped improved people's lives and provided them more free time to focus on what matters to them.
Every year many people die due to late diagnosis, misdiagnosis or inavailability of medical facilities. Hence a viable solution to such incidents would be research in these fields. Everyone should have access to free healthcare and hence it is important that science should focus on improving people's lives so that people can live a healthy life. For example, nowadays alot of research has been done is using artificial intelligence in medical diagnosis. The Agha Khan Hospital in Pakistan is building and training an AI model for the early diagnosis of brain tumor.
In conclusion, I agree with the statement that the main focus of science should on improving people's lives so that people can focus on their education and careers and live a healthy life with access to advanced healthcare facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position that science's main aim should be improving lives. Main ideas are relevant, such as freeing up time through domestic automation and advancing healthcare through AI research. However, while the first body paragraph adequately extends the idea of smart appliances, the healthcare argument contains some under-developed elements, such as the sudden pivot to free healthcare which is not fully tied back to the main prompt. The response successfully meets the requirements for a solid overview and satisfies the baseline of addressing the prompt, with elements of clearer extension pushing it slightly beyond a basic level, although further depth and consistent elaboration across all body paragraphs would be needed for a higher tier.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments about daily chores and medical research, and an introduction and conclusion frame the essay. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'Hence', and 'In conclusion' are present, though referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical rather than entirely natural or seamless. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Hence a viable solution' and 'and hence it is important' create some repetitive phrasing. The organizational structure is clear and easy to follow, successfully guiding the reader from the thesis statement through to the final summary without losing the thread of the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, displaying a sufficient range to discuss science and everyday applications. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'misdiagnosis', 'inavailability', and 'artificial intelligence', though there are some inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'alot' instead of 'a lot' and the slight awkwardness in phrasing 'inavailability of medical facilities' instead of unavailability. These minor lexical slips and spelling errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the intended meaning easily. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to demonstrate greater precision in word choice, better control over collocations, and consistent accuracy in spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied subordinate structures, such as conditional or participial clauses like 'due to late diagnosis, misdiagnosis or inavailability of medical facilities.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly regarding missing articles ('a dish washer can do the dishes', 'focus of science should on improving') and prepositions, but these rarely impede communication. The majority of the sentences are understandable, and basic verb forms and tenses are generally handled well. To achieve a higher standard, the writer would need to produce more frequent error-free sentences utilizing a wider variety of sophisticated complex structures with greater grammatical precision.
