Student answer (Band 5.5)

Basic purpose of science should be to enhance people lives. I strongly agree with this statement. I will explain the same with reasons and examples.

Firstly, most people live in poor countries where limited resources available. Although they use their skills that acquired from science knowledge, these skills help them to overcome their needs. For example, some hospitals have no equipments that used in surgeries. There people make alternate of these equipments through their knowledge. Secondly, science knowledge proved to be very helpful in the plants because it gives awareness related to different species of the plant. For instance, some species of the plant are not eatable because these contain poison. If these species eaten by someone, they would be die. Thirdly, science has vast applications in medical field that is useful to save people life. Doctors acquire knowledge about medication that applied on patient to save their lives.

However, it also has disadvantages. If people will misuse their skills then people lives would destroye. . Firstly, people use their science skills to make poisonous material which can harm individual. For example, if someone has revival, they can kill them by using non-edibale plant. They can make cold drinks by adding poisnous material. Furthermore, illigal use of technology can destroye lives of people. Some people use artificial intelligence in order to edit someone photoes. They misuse these photos for money. As a result, people became anxious because of their privacy issue.

In my conclusion, If we solve these issues, we could be able to get benefit of science. It can improve people lives because it has several applications. In my opinion, science should be the most important aim of people in order to improve their lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether science's primary aim should be improving lives. Relevant ideas are presented, such as the application of science in underdeveloped regions, plant biology, and medical treatments, alongside a discussion of potential disadvantages like misuse and privacy issues. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for example, the points regarding plant species and illegal technology use lack sufficient depth and specific real-world examples. The position is maintained throughout, though a tendency to over-generalise in places prevents the response from reaching a higher level of task fulfillment.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure ideas logically using sequencing devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Thirdly'. Paragraphing is used to separate the main advantages from the disadvantages and the conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always clear, as seen in abrupt transitions and sentences that lack smooth connection. For instance, the counter-argument paragraph begins abruptly with 'However, it also has disadvantages' and contains repetitive phrasing. To improve, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices to link sentences and paragraphs more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a minimally sufficient range to communicate basic concepts related to science and technology. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'artificial intelligence' and 'application', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'equipments' (uncountable noun usage), 'eatable' instead of 'edible', and 'illigal'. Spelling and word-choice errors occur throughout the text, though they generally do not completely impede communication. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, ensure correct word forms, and demonstrate greater precision in collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though the range of structures remains somewhat limited. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('in medical field'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward phrasing like 'people lives would destroye'. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede communication. The writer attempts complex structures, but these attempts are occasionally faulty, as seen in conditional patterns ('If these species eaten by someone, they would be die'). To progress further, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free sentences and exercise better control over verb forms and sentence architecture.
