Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the role of science in improving our lives, though it shifts focus toward the pros and cons of science rather than directly answering the extent of agreement with the statement. The position is visible in the introduction and conclusion, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of how science improves lifestyles or deals with illnesses lacks detailed explanation and specific examples. Similarly, the discussion on illegal tasks mentions hacking and terrorism briefly without expanding on how these relate back to the central theme of science's primary aim. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a fully developed position with well-supported arguments and thorough exploration of all parts of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation evident in the essay, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression across the text. While basic cohesive devices such as 'To add more' and 'To conclude' are used, they are at times repetitive, inaccurate, or mechanical. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is occasionally disjointed, such as the abrupt transition between everyday appliances and illegal activities. Pronoun referencing and signposting need to be managed more effectively to ensure smooth connections between ideas throughout the entire response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about technology and daily life. The writer attempts some less common items such as 'essential target' and 'black hat hacker', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'constent' instead of 'consent', 'plagirism' instead of 'plagiarism', and 'concerened' instead of 'concerned'. These lexical inadequacies and spelling mistakes cause some minor difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should expand their lexical range, pay closer attention to word formation, and ensure accurate spelling of common academic and technical terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues such as 'science have also improve' and 'pros of science is huge', incorrect prepositions like 'going bed' and 'staying in any side of the world', and missing articles. Punctuation and sentence boundary errors are also present, such as lowercase beginnings after full stops ('in this essay', 'although', 'to conclude'). Greater control over basic grammar and a wider variety of accurate complex structures are needed.
