IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent times, science has transformed from conventional ways to digital and smart techniques to make people's lives easier. In my opinion, the sole purpose of science should be for the welfare of people because science has revolutionized a lot in healthcare and medicines. It has also contributed to daily survival and finding a new home for the people of Earth.
Nowadays, the crucial thing for every human being is quality health. There is an abundance of diseases and illnesses spread around the world. Various pandemics and viruses take the lives of millions of people. With the advancements in the field of medical sciences, specialists have created vaccines and antibiotics to mitigate the risk of these deadly diseases. This has saved a large proportion of the population, providing the healthy lifestyle to every individual. For example, dialysis machines have been used in the hospitals for curing the kidney patients.
Climatic changes and the degradation of air quality on the Earth have caused problems for people, especially those living in the urban areas. They are surrounded by the polluted environment, and the food quality has also been lowered. Science has contributed to this domain by providing renewable energy sources. Electric cars have been introduced so that there are fewer emissions from vehicles. Space exploration programs have been ongoing, searching for a suitable environment where humans can survive. For instance, Elon Musk's SpaceX has been analyzing the trends of possible life on Mars.
In conclusion, science has been responsible for people's healthcare and medication. It has helped people explore the hidden areas mankind has never found. Therefore, it can be helpful in making better lifestyles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by taking a clear position that the primary aim of science should be human welfare, supported by examples such as healthcare and environmental management. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the medical section is reasonably well-supported with specific references to vaccines and dialysis machines, the environmental and space exploration points in the third paragraph are somewhat generalised and under-developed, particularly how exploring Mars directly improves people's current lives. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to extend all main ideas with more thorough explanations and fully relevant examples that consistently tie back to the core thesis of improving everyday lives.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used logically, with distinct body paragraphs focusing on health and environmental science respectively. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or simplistic. For instance, the transition between ideas relies on basic connectors like 'Nowadays' and 'For instance,' and referencing can occasionally lack precision, such as the ambiguous connection in 'This has saved a large proportion of the population, providing the healthy lifestyle to every individual.' To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother progression of ideas between sentences and paragraphs without relying on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's meaning throughout. The response demonstrates attempts to use less common and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'revolutionized,' 'mitigate the risk,' 'renewable energy sources,' and 'degradation.' Nevertheless, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'providing the healthy lifestyle to every individual' instead of 'a healthy lifestyle,' and 'curing the kidney patients' rather than 'treating kidney patients.' Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and these minor lexical slips do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer must demonstrate greater precision in word choice and master less common lexical items with more natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures reasonably well, as seen in sentences like 'Climatic changes and the degradation of air quality on the Earth have caused problems for people, especially those living in the urban areas.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, primarily involving article usage, such as omitting articles or adding them unnecessarily ('the healthy lifestyle,' 'the Earth' where 'Earth' is sufficient, and 'the urban areas'). Despite these errors, the grammatical control is adequate, and punctuation rarely impedes communication. To move higher, the writer needs to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and refine minor points of article and preposition agreement.
