Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position and discussing both sides of the issue: improving human lives versus considering the well-being of the environment and other species. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the argument regarding human health and quality of life is reasonably supported with examples like inventing medicines, the discussion surrounding environmental sustainability and the food chain is somewhat general and under-developed. Ideas are relevant, but extending the points with more specific consequences or examples would make the argument stronger. The position is maintained throughout, satisfying the requirements for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the focus on human life in one paragraph and environmental duties in another. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. The use of cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' is present, but referencing and transitions can be clumsy, as seen in the final concluding sentences which lack smooth integration and repeat phrases from the prompt rather than synthesizing the main arguments effectively.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'sustainable development', 'life-threatening', and 'meditative practices'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'imphasize' instead of 'emphasize', 'convencing' for 'convincing', 'soem' for 'some', 'quaity' for 'quality', and 'diseaces' for 'diseases'. While these lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not severely impede communication, they highlight the limitations in vocabulary control that keep the response at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and relative clauses. There are, however, frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause some difficulty for the reader. Issues include awkward article usage ('the science should imphasize'), incorrect verb forms ('should also focus be focusing'), prepositional errors, and problems with pluralization and subject-verb agreement ('science have soem very important duties', 'the believe of people'). Punctuation errors are also present, such as lowercase 'i' pronouns and incomplete concluding sentences that trail off. These errors represent a pattern of inaccuracy in complex structures.
