IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years, it is argued that the primary focus of science should be the betterment of humanity. I completely agree with this statement as it provides people with health benefits and essential living conditions that greatly enhnace the life expactancy.
First and foremost, science could be helpful in terms of health by introducing efficient treatments to the diseases. This means that it can invent new techniques or update the traditional methods for treating the diseases. As a result, a significant number of people in the country can life a healthy life with higher life expactancy in the developing countries such as Pakistan. For instance, in Japan, science helped a lot in the treatment of diseases that help their people to have the highest average life than any other country in the world.
Furthermore, I believe that science can improve the living conditions in a number of ways such as water puroficantion, environmental friendly vehicles and sustainable living models. This is mainly because the pollution is increasing day by day due to heavy traffic and poor waste management.
Consequetly, the future can be saved only with the help of sustainable models and implementations on them. A good illustration of this is indoor farming that not only protects the land but also reduces the pollution caused by harvesting and transportation. Therefore, I believe that science can help us to live a healthy and environmental friendly life.
In conclusion, I firmly agree that science should focus mainly on the improvement of people's life. This provides us benefits such as a good health, a safe environment and a long life, ultimately making this world a better place for us to live.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task with a clear position throughout, as demonstrated by the opening statement 'I completely agree with this statement as it provides people with health benefits and essential living conditions'. Ideas are extended and supported, such as the use of Japan as an illustration of how science impacts life expectancy, and the mention of indoor farming to support environmental improvements. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as claiming science can save the future solely through sustainable models, which keeps the response within this level. To reach higher, the main body paragraphs could offer even deeper extension and more nuanced analysis rather than relying on slightly broad generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the essay. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs focusing on health and living conditions respectively, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used flexibly, such as 'First and foremost', 'Furthermore', and 'A good illustration of this', which effectively guide the reader through the arguments. Referencing is generally clear, though referencing and paragraph flow could occasionally be smoother to achieve a truly seamless progression. The mechanical or slightly repetitive use of transitional phrases in places prevents the text from reaching the highest tiers of cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'sustainable living models', 'waste management', and 'betterment of humanity'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('enhnace', 'expactancy', 'puroficantion', 'environmental friendly' instead of environmentally friendly, 'Consequetly') and occasional word choice inaccuracies ('can life a healthy life', 'highest average life'). These errors do not impede communication, placing the vocabulary firmly in the mid-range tier. To improve, the student needs to pay closer attention to word formation, collocations, and accurate spelling of common academic terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing effectively (e.g., 'that not only protects the land but also reduces the pollution'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions ('in developing countries such as Pakistan', 'the highest average life'), subject-verb agreement issues ('treatments to the diseases'), and preposition placement. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the writer demonstrates good control over basic structures while successfully attempting complex sentences. To move further up, the writing would need a higher proportion of completely error-free complex sentences and more precise punctuation control.
