IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is widely discussed that most crucial aim of science should be to make people's lives better. I agree with this view such as scientists should produce drugs to treat life-threatening diseases, introduce technologies beneficial for the public but these innovations should be economically beneficial for the government and country.
To begin with, researchers should develop medicines and therapies to improve healthcare. People will get scientifically tested treatments which may contribute in preventing fatal disorders. For example, cancer patients will enjoy rapid recovery with introduction of better drugs and treatments. Consequently, public can enjoy a better healthcare facilities.
Another significant aim should be to innovate renewable energy sources to make environment neat and clean. The best illustration of this is that there will be less carbon emissions in the air and people can breathe in pure air. Therefore, there will be a decrease in respiratory disorders.
On the other hand, scientists should also focus on innovations that should be economical beneficial. They should produce products that should have a positive impact on people as well as on the government. For instance, if their discoveries will not be suitable for the establishment then the public suffer in the long run.
In my opinion, they should focus to improve people's lives but also consider benefits for the government and country.
To sum up, although science can improve healthcare system, enable people to live longer, and make surroundings clean with low green house gases, researchers should also focus on the economy of their country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear overall position regarding the aims of science. However, some ideas are developed more fully than others. While the points regarding healthcare and renewable energy are supported with relevant examples like cancer patients and cleaner air, the economic argument introduced in the third body paragraph is somewhat under-developed and repetitive, appearing again almost identically in the conclusion. To reach a higher band, the economic aspect would need deeper extension and clearer connection to the central theme of improving people's lives rather than just serving the government.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from healthcare to environmental benefits and economic considerations. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, and the essay opens with a clear introduction and closes with a distinct summary. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To begin with', 'Another significant aim', and 'On the other hand', which helps guide the reader through the text. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in its linking patterns, and referencing within sentences (such as pronoun use) occasionally lacks seamless integration. This performance fully satisfies the lower band while showing emerging elements of logical structuring that approach higher levels of flexible organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'life-threatening diseases', 'respiratory disorders', and 'renewable energy sources'. There are, however, some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'economical beneficial' instead of 'economically beneficial', and missing articles like 'public can enjoy a better healthcare facilities'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate more precision in word formation and collocation, using less common lexical items with greater stylistic control and naturalness throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more intricate clauses, such as 'People will get scientifically tested treatments which may contribute in preventing fatal disorders.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including article omission ('public suffer in the long run'), preposition choice ('contribute in preventing' instead of 'contribute to preventing'), and minor agreement issues. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater frequency of error-free sentences and tighter control over grammatical patterns.
