Student answer (Band 5.0)
People have different opinions on the given statement that science has an important aim to improve people's lives. But in my opinion, the important aim of science is to improve people's lives by the development we have seen nowadays. There are advantages of this as well as disadvantages.
On the one hand there are so many advantages of science that improve people's lives more then the past. In past when there was no use of science people's did not have basic life accessories to meet their basic need's, like they did not have enough food to feed theirself's, they did not have proper medical facilities for the emergency cases, etc. Science aims to improve people's lives and provide them with the alot of basic needs. Through science, there are a lot of development in different fields that are related to human life and their basic needs. In fact there are a lot of things that are part of human lives but that are only possible
On the other hand there are so many disadvantages of science as well. As science make people's lives much easier, it also makes so much difficulties for the people's. Nowadays people's suffer from a lot of different diseases and etc.
In conclusion, science most important aim is to improve people's lives. Science add a lot of new inventions in human life, as it provide so much benifits to the human's. In past when their was no science involved in human lives, people suffer a lot for their basic need.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt partially, attempting to discuss whether the main aim of science is to improve lives. The position is stated at the beginning and end, though it is somewhat repetitive and lacks a fully developed line of reasoning. Relevant ideas are introduced regarding historical hardships and modern medical or technological advancements, but they remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the paragraph discussing the disadvantages of science mentions that people suffer from various diseases, yet fails to elaborate or provide specific examples to support this claim. Furthermore, the final sentence of the second body paragraph cuts off mid-thought, indicating an incomplete development of ideas that prevents a higher score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a discernible attempt at overall organisation, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides, and a conclusion, though the progression lacks clarity. Cohesive devices are used repetitively or mechanically, such as the frequent reliance on transitional phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences within paragraphs sometimes lack logical connection or progression. For example, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the sudden shift in the third paragraph where the text trails off without proper closure. To improve cohesiveness, the writer needs to ensure that each paragraph flows logically into the next and that cohesive devices are varied and employed accurately to link ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with frequent lexical errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There is a heavy reliance on basic, repetitive terms such as 'people's lives', 'basic need', and 'science'. The student attempts less common vocabulary or phrases, but these often contain errors in word choice, form, or spelling, such as 'feed theirself's', 'need's', 'alot', and 'benifits'. Spelling and morphological inaccuracies are noticeable throughout the text, including 'their' instead of 'there'. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range, demonstrate greater precision in word choice, and eliminate basic spelling and word-formation errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex ones. Frequent errors in grammar occur throughout the response, including issues with subject-verb agreement, pluralisation, and prepositions, such as in 'people's did not have' and 'people suffer a lot for their basic need'. Punctuation and article usage also show consistent inaccuracy. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the flow of the text. To progress to the next level, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence forms with improved accuracy and tighter control over basic grammatical rules.
