Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position of agreement regarding whether science should primarily improve lives. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times repetitive, which places the response at this level. While the writer mentions relevant areas such as healthcare, technology, and the environment, these points remain under-developed and lack specific, well-elaborated examples. For instance, the discussion on healthcare simply states that science develops medicines and equipment without exploring deeper impacts or providing a concrete scenario. Furthermore, the final paragraph touches on studying the universe, which slightly diverges from the main focus on improving human lives. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to extend each main point with deeper explanations and concrete examples rather than general assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text shows a basic attempt at organisation, using transition markers such as 'Firstly', 'secondly', and 'However' to separate paragraphs. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences is frequently disrupted. Cohesive devices are often used inaccurately or repetitively, such as the constant reliance on phrases like 'helps a lot' or 'quite a lot'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks precision, with some sentences feeling disjointed from their paragraph's main theme. Pronoun referencing and substitution are also weak, leading to ambiguity in places. To improve, the writer should focus on creating smoother transitions between sentences and ensuring that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one without relying on repetitive structural patterns.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and limited, just barely adequate for the task. The writer relies heavily on simple and repetitive words, such as 'help', 'life', 'society', and 'technology'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, including 'plays the modern role', 'illness people', 'reduce population' (intended to mean pollution), and 'other propose' (intended to mean purpose). Additionally, spelling and word-form issues occur, such as 'alot' and 'envention'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the vocabulary from being flexible or precise. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, incorporate less common lexical items with correct collocations, and pay closer attention to word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that contain frequent errors. The writer struggles with basic sentence structures, subject-verb agreement, and verb tenses, as seen in phrases like 'Scientist has change quite a lot' and 'science has develop'. Punctuation is also weak, with missing periods, comma splices, and erratic capitalization, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters like 'secondly' and 'Conclusion'. Attempts at complex structures are often faulty, leading to frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader and obscure meaning in several places. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical forms, improve punctuation, and construct error-free complex sentences.
