Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing whether the main aim of science should be to improve lives, presenting a position that acknowledges both positive and negative implications. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For example, while the writer mentions medical and computer science advancements like vaccines and artificial intelligence, these points are not fully extended with thorough explanations or specific real-world examples beyond general assertions. Similarly, the counter-arguments regarding workforce changes and dependency are introduced briefly without deep exploration. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to expand on their arguments with more detailed supporting points and fully developed reasoning throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

There is a coherent overall arrangement to the essay, dividing the introduction, body paragraphs addressing advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion into distinct paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. While basic cohesive devices such as 'Primarly', 'Additionally', and 'Neverthless' are employed to signal transitions, referencing and linking are not always clear or smooth. For instance, transitional phrases sometimes contain typographical or mechanical issues, and the progression between ideas within paragraphs feels disjointed at times. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, but managing logical progression and finer cohesive links more naturally would elevate the organizational quality of the writing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for addressing the prompt. Attempts are made to use less common items such as 'ubiquitous', 'implication', and 'trajectory', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word form, choice, and spelling, such as 'ressertion', 'dicover', 'virsuses', 'out come', and 'idol' instead of 'idle'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips are noticeable and may occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student should focus on expanding their precise control over word choices, ensuring correct word forms are used in context, and paying closer attention to standard spelling conventions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying on a mix of simple forms alongside attempts at complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are noticeable errors in grammar throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'various branches of sciences... has play', prepositional errors such as 'addressing to adverse challenge to across', and article or pluralization mistakes like 'save the life of people'. These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally pause and can cause difficulty in comprehension. To achieve a higher standard, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over complex grammatical patterns, verb tenses, article usage, and accurate punctuation.
