Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing whether science should primarily aim to improve lives, presenting arguments both for and against. However, some ideas remain under-developed or general. For example, while the writer mentions solar panels and electric vehicles as sustainable innovations, this point is not fully extended with further explanation. Similarly, the counter-argument regarding nuclear weapons touches on historical conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war, but the link between these events and the broader scientific purpose is somewhat limited. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to expand on these main points with more detailed supporting examples and clearer elaboration throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, as well as distinct body paragraphs marked by transitional phrases like 'Firstly' and 'On the contrary'. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical, and referencing is not always completely clear. For instance, the transition between sentences within the body paragraphs occasionally feels abrupt, and cohesive devices are somewhat basic or repetitive. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should ensure smoother logical links between sentences and use a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly to guide the reader effortlessly through the arguments.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'sustainable', 'under-privileged', and 'livelyhood'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes like 'imporving' and 'technogical', as well as word choice and collocation inaccuracies such as 'farmore' and 'more hard'. These errors do not heavily impede communication, but they restrict the score. To move up, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision in word choice, improve spelling accuracy, and integrate a wider selection of natural, higher-level lexical items without relying on flawed forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ability to construct compound and complex sentences such as 'Innovations such as solar panels, electric vehicles clean water and energy should be made accessible...'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage, including run-on structures like comma splices ('...changing,on a day to day basis...'), missing articles ('...from a 100 years ago'), and faulty verb agreement or tense patterns. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must exercise better control over complex sentence structures, punctuation rules, and basic grammatical accuracy.
