Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt regarding whether the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives, taking a clear stance that science has indeed improved every sector. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of medical and technological advancements is repeated across paragraphs without sufficient extension or concrete examples from personal experience. The position is discernible, but the overall development remains basic, reflecting a partial treatment of the task where points are stated rather than fully elaborated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation evident in the attempt to divide the essay into distinct paragraphs, including an introduction and a conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the text, and ideas tend to loop back on themselves rather than move forward logically. Cohesive devices are either inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, with sentences often strung together awkwardly without appropriate transition words. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in vague phrases like 'according to current affair' and 'at last like to conclude', which disrupts the flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited in range, though minimally adequate for expressing basic concepts about science and technology. There are numerous noticeable lexical and spelling errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'numerious', 'dieasese', 'sacrified', 'comune', and 'modefied'. Word choice is frequently imprecise, for example using 'current affair' when referring to current trends or the modern era, and the repetition of basic terms like 'science', 'technology', and 'life' restricts the lexical variety needed for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, with the majority of attempts at complex sentences resulting in faulty grammar. There are frequent errors in verb forms and tenses, such as 'science has play', 'technology has made life very simple and easier', and 'science had aim'. Additionally, issues with subject-verb agreement, missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and a complete lack of standard punctuation (including lowercase beginnings of sentences and absent apostrophes) are pervasive throughout the response, causing frequent difficulty for the reader.
