Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position throughout that science's primary goal should be to improve human lives. Relevant ideas are presented, such as healthcare advancements and technological innovations, and 10 words copied directly from the prompt were excluded from the official word count evaluation. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the argument regarding health and technology contains examples, the counter-argument regarding space exploration in the fourth paragraph remains somewhat limited and under-developed, lacking deep extension. To reach a higher band, all main ideas would need to be equally well-elaborated with robust supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group ideas into paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, body paragraphs focusing on health and technology, a contrasting perspective, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The use of transitional phrases feels repetitive, such as starting multiple consecutive sentences with 'The main reason is that', 'Another reason is that', and 'In contrast'. Furthermore, referencing and logical progression occasionally falter, as seen in the abrupt transitions between sentences within the body paragraphs. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices and ensure smoother links between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common items such as 'artificial intelligence', 'virtual reality', and 'innovative gadgets'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that reflect a limited and developing lexical control. Examples include 'Science upgraded with so many outcomes', 'individuals lives' instead of 'individuals' lives', 'reaserach', 'dieseas', 'uncurable', and 'lunches' instead of 'launches'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, enhance precision in collocations, and eliminate spelling and word-form inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use subordination and varied structures. Nevertheless, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Noticeable issues include subject-verb agreement and tense errors, such as 'science already helping', 'science has already change', 'many scientific research help', 'science are researching', and 'science have made'. Additionally, there are awkward phrasing patterns and article omissions. These errors mean that while communication is rarely completely blocked, control over complex structures remains inconsistent. To progress further, the writer must improve accuracy in verb formations, plurals, and basic sentence construction.
