IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Scientific innovations are largely aimed at improving people's quality of lives. While one school of thought contends that the sole purpose of science is to benefit people, others believe there are wider implications beyond benefit its impact on humanity.
Scientific finfings have always known to improve different aspects of our lives through direct or indirect means. For instance, the discovery of penicillin opend up a wider field of antibiotics that has served as treatment for several diseases. We have progressed from preliminary designs for air transport to building aeroplanes to supersonic jets and even rockets that have helped with exploration of outer space. Great innovation is often never the first product of effort, it comes with several failed versions before it is actually beneficial in one way or the other. However, all the failures were necessary as they behaved like a catalyst to produce the ultimate version. Therefore, all scientific research irrespective of the usability of the final product is meaningful. However, the intention of such innovation should be strictly meant to benefit not only humans but also the overall ecological systems that we live in.
Certain research such as the development of nuclear weapons are examples of downsides of unregulated scientific exploration. Although it a weapon of mass destruction, the nuclear technology has been established as a reliable source of renewable energy. Therefore, all forms of scientic exploration is necessary but the objective of such research must be for the greater good of humanity and our environment. We are not the sole inhabitants of earth and should be mindful of the impact of our technological creation on the other residents of the planet as well. Climate change, air and oceanic pollution are some of the consequences of our dicoveries that not only impact us but the entire ecosystem.
In conclusion, I believe scientific research and development should be strictly regulated to ensure the safety of humans as well as our environments. All forms of research should be encouraged provided that the downsides of the dicoveries are not harmful to the inhabitants and the environment of the planet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout, acknowledging both the primary focus on human improvement and the wider implications of scientific exploration. The ideas are extended and supported well, such as using the development of penicillin and nuclear technology to illustrate the dual nature of research. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as the claim that all failures were necessary catalysts, which represents a slightly simplistic argument. This places the task response securely in the band where all parts are addressed, though some ideas lean towards being a little under-developed or broad rather than fully sustained with deeper analysis. To reach a higher level, the arguments regarding the ecological impact and the broader purposes of science could be explored with more specific nuance and tighter logical extension.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout from the introduction to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct body paragraphs addressing different facets of the argument. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas together, though referencing is occasionally faulty or mechanical, such as the slightly repetitive use of transitional adverbs like 'However' at the beginning of consecutive sentences in the second paragraph. Pronoun referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to truly demonstrate the flexible cohesion characteristic of the next band. Further mastery of a wider variety of cohesive relationships without mechanical transitions would elevate this organizational control.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's ideas. The student attempts less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'technological creation', 'ecological systems', and 'unregulated scientific exploration'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors, including 'finfings' instead of findings, 'opend' instead of opened, and 'dicoveries' and 'scientic' elsewhere in the text, alongside minor word choice slips like 'benefit its impact on humanity'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the lexical range firmly in this band. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to eliminate spelling mistakes and demonstrate a more precise control over sophisticated vocabulary and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues such as 'all forms of scientic exploration is necessary' instead of 'are', and minor structural slips like 'Although it a weapon of mass destruction' missing a verb. These errors represent the persistent inaccuracies typical of this level rather than frequent disruptions to understanding. To move up to the next bracket, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter control over subject-verb agreement and article usage.
