IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Betterment of human's lives should be the primary goal of science. I strongly agree with that statement because many diseases like Cancer and Rabbies are still uncureable and cheap energy resources are still considered as a myth, While study of astrology is also considered crucial by some people.

To begin with, finding solutions to cure diseases is essential for mankind. There are many viruses which do not have a proper treatment yet. Scientists should work on this rather then just finding new planets. For instance, Physicians developed a vaccine that strenghen amune system but they do not have a solution for this. Furthermore, Cancer and Rabbies are widely Known as dead diseases and it is also true that, they also not have proper medications. Scientists are only able to discover prevention from these till now.

Moreover, world is facing a huge energy crises and natural resources like oil and gas are rapidly wiping out. Developing nations like Pakistan, India are the biggest victims of it. There are some renewable alternates like solar and wind energy but they are not cheap and very expensive to repair as well, while thier maintenance is costly too. Sceintist should consider this as their top priority. After that they should consider astrology and other things.

To sum up, all the studies are important but improvement of peoples live is most important among all.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position in agreement with the statement that science should focus on improving people's lives. However, ideas remain limited and under-developed, relying on brief examples like curing cancer or addressing the energy crisis without deeper expansion. Furthermore, the length requirement was not met, as the essay contains only 228 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. To reach the next level, the writer needs to extend their arguments with more detailed explanations, fully develop all supporting points, and ensure the full word count is achieved.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text demonstrates some organisation with the use of basic paragraphing and transitional markers such as 'To begin with' and 'Moreover'. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the essay, and the conclusion is abrupt. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or overused, and referencing is occasionally unclear. To improve, the writer should ensure a smoother logical flow between sentences and paragraphs, making sure each new idea builds directly on the previous one with a wider and more natural range of cohesive links.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'uncureable' instead of 'incurable', 'Rabbies' instead of 'rabies', 'strenghen' instead of 'strengthen', 'amune' instead of 'immune', and 'Sceintist' instead of 'scientist'. To progress, the student needs to expand their lexical range and pay closer attention to spelling and precise word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple and straightforward sentences. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, and there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('world is facing', 'improvement of peoples live'), incorrect verb forms ('they also not have proper medications'), and punctuation issues around conjunctions. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should practice forming more complex sentences accurately and reduce basic grammatical slips.
