IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The most significant goal of the science should be to increase the standard of living for humans. I partially agree and disagree with this statement as science have many more another responsibilites to fulfill as well.
In today's world as science is growing rapindly and made many successful experiments on medicines to cure the uncurable diseases. For example, in 2020 the world is suffering from the corona disease and due to vast discoveries and modern equipments the scientists finally make an antidote for this disease. This not only help the human being to get thier life back on the track but also help them to make thier body strong and resiliant from diseases.
On the other hand, there are many more things that needs to be discover yet. For instance, our solar system is too complicated and hides mysteries in the black shawdow. This needs to be discovered because we can research for the things that universe had provided us. Secondly, if human gets everything they want they will become more depandant and lazy in their life
As their dependancy on machinery make them useless and kills their ability to think. For example, artifical intelligence become a major part in human life. Youngest are relying more the software such as chapgpt or gemini for thier answers in the academic or in real life. This lack innovation and child will loose its potential to perform in the real world.
To conclude, science should maintain balance in approaching human needs and dependancy. Science should focus to eliminate any disease from the humans but it should not overlook the other things that needs to be discover.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Overall | 5.5 |
Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position, stating partial agreement with the prompt. Relevant ideas are introduced regarding both the improvement of living standards and the pursuit of pure scientific knowledge and space exploration. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack extension. For instance, the discussion on artificial intelligence and student dependency is raised but not fully expanded with robust supporting arguments. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to ensure that every main idea is thoroughly supported with more detailed explanations and fully realized examples rather than brief mentions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as medical advancements versus space exploration and technology. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, seen in transitions like 'Secondly' and repetitive referencing patterns. Additionally, referencing is not always clear, such as the pronoun use when shifting between ideas. To progress further, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's core message. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'resiliant', 'dependancy', and 'artificial intelligence', but these are accompanied by noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'rapindly', 'uncurable', and 'shawdow'. Furthermore, collocations and word forms occasionally lack precision, such as 'make an antidote' instead of 'develop an antidote'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. To improve, the writer must focus on accurate spelling, appropriate word formation, and more natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and subordinate clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'science have many more another responsibilites', article misuse, and tense inconsistencies such as 'the world is suffering' in a past-time context. While the meaning remains generally clear, these persistent errors prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of grammatical control. A stronger performance would require greater accuracy in complex sentence patterns, correct article usage, and reliable verb tense consistency.
