Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt only partially. While the writer manages to take a clear position supporting the idea that science and technology should improve human life, the development of ideas is limited and sometimes tangential. For instance, the discussion moves into transport history and air pollution, which drifts away from the core premise of whether improving lives is the primary aim of science. The ideas presented are often repetitive, stating that life has become easier or more advanced without providing deeper extension or detailed, well-supported arguments. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to present fully developed main ideas that remain strictly focused on the task prompt throughout the entire essay, avoiding tangents regarding historical transport hardships.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, but overall progression is lacking. The logical flow between and within sentences is frequently hindered by mechanical and repetitive use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'Moreover,' which do not always logically connect the claims being made. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the thread of argument, particularly in the second body paragraph where transitions between ideas feel abrupt. To achieve a higher band, the essay needs a more natural and sophisticated management of cohesion, ensuring that sentences flow seamlessly into one another and that paragraphing is used to build a transparent and progressive line of argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'contaminent' and 'intertainment,' but these attempts are frequently marred by spelling and word-form errors. Noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'servive' instead of 'survive' and 'relevent' instead of 'relevant,' can cause some difficulty for the reader. Collocations are often unnatural, as seen in phrases like 'enhance their education system' when applied to the historical lack of facilities. To progress to a higher lexical band, the student must expand their vocabulary range, improve spelling accuracy, and learn how to use words and collocations more precisely and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside poorly constructed complex forms. Frequent errors are present in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as in 'did not had transport system' and 'peoples have much option.' Complex sentence attempts frequently contain structural faults that can cause confusion for the reader. Punctuation control is also weak in several areas. To reach higher bands, the writer must demonstrate a better control of basic grammar rules, eliminate frequent errors in verb forms and plurals, and successfully integrate a wider variety of accurate complex sentence structures.
