IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Improving the lives of the public should be the main goal of science. I agree with this statement. I believe that science should be defined as the knowledge that brings convinience in the life of people.
In past, people lived a different life. They had no technology. Everyday, they faced new challenges but they had no solution. They fell victim to diseases and died. However, nowadays, we have medications for fighting with diseases. We have technology that have made our lives much easier. All these convinience is due to science. Scientists have worked hard to give us this amazing life. They worked for benefiting their nations. For example, we cannot imagine our lives without electricity.
On the other hand, some scientists focus on just learning and discovering something fascinating. For instance, astronauts just study the space for knowing more about planets and stars. This knowledge is captivating. It helps us to understand the world in which we are living. Archeologists research about the history. They hunt for getting how people before us lived. This sort of knowledge and research is just for understanding how this world works.
In conclusion, although knowledge of the world in which we are living is interesting, people want inventions. They want things that would make their jobs easier. In the present, we are facing a number of health related issues such as diseases and inadequate resources. The need of the hour is to discover new resources for a better future instead of finding the secrets of the Earth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that science's primary focus should be improving lives. The main ideas are relevant and supported, showing elements of a higher band by extending the argument regarding practical inventions versus purely theoretical research. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or simplistic in their explanation, such as the brief mentions of historical challenges and astronauts studying space. To reach a higher level, the ideas would need more thorough expansion with deeper justification and fully realized examples rather than generalized statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraphing structure that separates the introduction, the supporting argument for the main view, the counter-argument about theoretical science, and the conclusion. Ideas are generally logically sequenced, meeting the criteria for this band. However, the use of cohesive devices is at times mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on starting sentences with 'They' or simple conjunctions like 'However' and 'On the other hand'. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of referencing and transitional phrases to create smoother progression between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating straightforward ideas about science and technology. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary items, such as 'convinience', 'captivating', and 'inadequate', but these are accompanied by noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as spelling 'convenience' incorrectly and using 'hunt for getting' instead of more natural collocations. These lexical shortcomings sit comfortably within this band, as they do not seriously impede overall communication. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their range of less common lexical items and refine their precision regarding word form and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures like subject-verb-object patterns and some multi-clause sentences. There are several grammatical errors present, including pluralization and article issues such as 'in life of people', verb agreement errors like 'technology that have made', and preposition misusages. These errors are typical of this band level; they occur frequently when attempting complex structures, but they rarely impede communication. For a higher score, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate better command over articles and subject-verb agreement.
