IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The most vital role of science should be to ameliorate individuals lives. From my perspective, I agree that science have made people's lives extremely easy and convinient. However, I also believe that science and technology have taken a human ability to think naturally.
On the one hand, in contemporary society, science and technology have gained immense popularity among the public. They are introduced to make inhabitants life more easy and tension free. This can be exemplified by the introduction of AI (artificial intelliegnce), people mostly students now frequently use applications such as Gemini, ChatGPT, Meta AI, and much more for their assigments and preparation of lecture, notes and examinations, which means they rely completely on AI and it has become more flexible nowadays to prepare for their course as they can simply type their concern and get the results. It is commonly believed by many students all over the world that these applications have take less time to prepare as compared to the previous era when science and technology was not popular and when the previous generations have to take a lot of time just to make up an assignement with the assistance of their brains.
On the other hand, science has snatched the ability of humans to think from their minds, because of the innovation of science and technology. They do not have made lives easier but it's cautious to know that human natural abilities are declining and that AI is outweighing over it. For instance, we can give sight to the new generations that are coming, we can notice that an ability to think has reduced as there is more power to science, even I myself have lost the ability to think and that I instantly take help from AI and sciences which is kind of risky and at the same time dangerous.
In conclusion, I would like to propose that science's aim to enhace people's lives is not crucial, what is more important that natural ability is dropping which is also concerning. So I disagree that science's aim to improve peoples live is not true and their main aim is to demolish natural abilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt only partially, leading to a restricted exploration of the issue. While the writer manages to state a position, it lacks clarity at times and shifts confusingly between agreeing and disagreeing with the statement. For instance, in the conclusion, the writer attempts to argue that science's primary aim is actually to demolish natural abilities rather than improve lives, which contradicts parts of the introduction. Ideas remain limited and somewhat under-developed, relying on repetitive arguments about artificial intelligence taking away the natural ability to think without providing deeper analysis or fully extended examples. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to maintain a consistent position throughout, ensure all parts of the prompt are addressed with fully developed arguments, and avoid contradictory conclusions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents some overall organization with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the ideas do not always flow smoothly from one to the next. Cohesive devices are sometimes used mechanically or repetitively, such as the heavy reliance on transitional phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Furthermore, referencing and logical connections between sentences occasionally become blurry, as seen in the third paragraph where the transition from general observations about AI to personal admission ('even I myself have lost the ability to think') disrupts the academic tone and logical flow. Enhancing progression and varying cohesive devices more naturally would improve this aspect of the writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student displays a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors and issues with word choice, collocation, and word form that cause some difficulty for the reader. For example, phrases like 'ameliorate individuals lives' contain punctuation and form errors, 'convinient' is misspelled, and expressions like 'AI is outweighing over it' misuse standard collocations. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'contemporary society' and 'artificial intelligence', inaccuracies persist throughout the essay, including 'assigments' and 'enhace'. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to spelling and word formation, and ensure that less-common words are used accurately in appropriate contexts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, with frequent attempts at complex sentences often resulting in faulty grammar. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'science have made' instead of 'has made', 'inhabitants life more easy' lacking proper pluralisation and possessive marking, and 'applications have take less time' showing a tense error. Additionally, run-on sentences and punctuation issues occur, such as in the final sentence of the conclusion where multiple clauses are joined loosely with commas and conjunctions. Reducing error frequency and incorporating a wider variety of accurate, error-free complex sentence structures are essential steps for improvement.
