Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent times science makes the life of people easier that some people believes that the ultimate goal of science is to make people's life better. I partially see eye to eye with this notion which I will discuss in upcoming paragraphs.

To commence wiith, the are ample reasons why science is responsible to make people's life better. The first and foremost is that it provides many facilities. To be more precise, by the technological advancement people are able to do their daily task more accurately and on time. Science helps people to save alot of time by using the applications like chatGPT, reminders and many more. People is also able to track their health record by using phone. In a survey held by British broadcasting company's results were increased by 75% just because of the technology as employers are able to be more productive.

On the other hand, technological advancements also has many kind of disadvantages which can not be ignored. Firstly, leading to stressfull life. To explain, nowdays people get more addicted to their phones and spend hours scrolling the social media sites. In an article from the Hindu 60% problems faced by people especially the young group are due to phone addiction.

To conclude, although there are many advantages of technology , its disadvantages can not be neglected. If people learn to use technology in a balanced way it will be proven beneficial not only for society but for the world as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt regarding whether the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives, expressing a partial agreement. However, important length requirements are not met, as the response is four words short of the two hundred and fifty-word minimum. While the writer presents a position and attempts to support it with ideas such as productivity and phone addiction, these ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the reference to a survey by the British Broadcasting Company and the study from the Hindu lack sufficient elaboration and clear relevance to the core question of science's overarching aim. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to fully meet the minimum word count and extend their arguments with more thorough explanations and concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical progression. The essay is divided into appropriate paragraphs, starting with an introduction, moving to body paragraphs addressing both sides of the argument, and finishing with a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal the structure, such as 'To commence with', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude'. However, some elements of cohesion are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'To commence wiith' which contains a typographical error, and referencing is occasionally unclear. To achieve a higher band, the writer should ensure that cohesive devices are integrated more naturally and that transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow more smoothly without relying on formulaic phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to communicate basic ideas about technology and daily life. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'technological advancements', 'productivity', and 'addiction', but these are accompanied by notable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form. Examples include 'stressfull life' instead of 'stressful life', and awkward phrasing like 'the are ample reasons' and 'young group'. There are also minor spelling slips, such as 'alot' and 'nowdays'. These inaccuracies occasionally cause minor difficulty or distraction for the reader. To improve in this area, the writer needs to expand their control of collocations, refine word forms, and eliminate basic spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting complex forms with clauses like 'which I will discuss in upcoming paragraphs' and 'if people learn to use technology'. However, attempts at complex sentences are frequently marred by errors in grammar, agreement, and articles. Noticeable errors include subject-verb agreement issues such as 'science makes the life of people easier that some people believes' and 'People is also able', as well as article misuse like 'in an article from the Hindu' lacking necessary prepositions or modifiers. While communication is rarely completely obscured, the frequent errors in basic grammatical patterns and punctuation restrict the score. To progress, the writer must exercise greater accuracy with verb tenses, plurals, and subject-verb agreement.
