Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position in agreement with the statement that the main aim of science should be to improve lives, supported by relevant ideas such as increased life expectancy and convenience. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full elaboration. For instance, the reference to cancer treatments is stated generally without sufficient extension. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 204 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to ensure the word count requirement is satisfied and provide more fully extended and supported arguments for each main point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance stated in the introduction and reinforced in a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct supporting ideas, such as health benefits in the second paragraph and everyday convenience in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the abrupt transition in 'To justify, the development of advance technology...' and the slightly disconnected sentence structures between ideas. To progress further, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices to ensure smoother logical progression and integration between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'expectancy', 'innovations', and 'convenient'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling that reflect a limited and developing lexical control. Examples include 'expectacy' instead of expectancy, 'diagnoises' instead of diagnoses, 'deady' instead of deadly, 'health life' instead of healthy life, and 'extend' instead of extent in the conclusion. These inaccuracies do not entirely impede communication, but they cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should focus on word formation, spelling accuracy, and precise collocational usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like ideas. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving subject-verb agreement, articles, and word forms within grammatical patterns. Examples include 'because its improve health and life of people', 'one of the main reasons of my approval is increasing life expectacy', 'science make everyday life easier', and 'modern innovations has made'. These errors can cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must exercise greater control over basic grammatical structures, verb agreements, and tense consistency.
