Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern era, science has advanced significantly and has become an important part of people's lives. The most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives. I completely agree with this statement because scientific development can improve education, technology and many aspects of daily life.

One of the main reasons is that science plays a vital role in people's lives. Without scientific development, people would face many problems in their daily activities. Science makes many tasks easier by introducing different techniques and methods. For example, scientific development can be very beneficial in formal education because it can change the way young people think. Students can develop their interests and take part in science-related activities. As a result, they can gain more knowledge and develop useful skills for their future.

Another important reason is that science has introduced major advances in digital technology. People can now perform many tasks more easily and communicate with each other through social media platforms. Science has also contributed to the development of artificial intelligence, which can help people complete different tasks more quickly. For instance, people around the world can use digital technology to communicate, study and work without being physically present in the same place. Therefore, scientific advancement can make people's lives easier and more convenient.

In conclusion, I completely agree that improving people's lives should be one of the most important aims of science. Scientific development can improve education, communication and technology, while also helping people perform their daily tasks more easily. Therefore, science plays an essential role in creating a better life for people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear throughout: you completely agree that science should aim to improve people’s lives, and you address the topic with relevant points about education and digital technology. The examples of students gaining knowledge and people studying, working and communicating remotely help illustrate your argument. However, the education point is not fully connected to how scientific research improves people’s lives, and the claim that science makes daily tasks easier remains broad. The discussion also focuses mainly on benefits, with little explanation of why improving lives should be science’s most important aim rather than one aim among others. Develop each reason with a more specific example and explain how it supports your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs present reasons, and the conclusion restates the main argument. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking phrases such as “Another important reason,” “For instance,” and “Therefore” make relationships easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation for coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the repeated use of “science” and “people” makes the links somewhat mechanical, and several sentences repeat the general claim that science makes life easier rather than advancing the argument. Use clearer referencing and vary how you connect examples to their implications, so each paragraph develops rather than restates its point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “scientific development,” “digital technology,” “artificial intelligence,” and “communication.” These terms are relevant and the meaning remains clear. However, much of the wording is general or repetitive: “people’s lives,” “different tasks,” “many aspects,” and “easier” recur without adding precision. Some expressions are also broad or slightly awkward, such as “change the way young people think” and “science-related activities,” which do not clearly convey the intended benefit. To strengthen your vocabulary, choose more precise terms for the effects of science and use natural collocations. For example, specify how technology improves access to education or enables remote work, rather than relying on general claims.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your writing includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. You use subordinate clauses effectively in constructions such as “because it can change the way young people think” and “which can help people complete different tasks more quickly.” The present perfect in “science has advanced significantly” and “has introduced major advances” is also controlled. Some sentence patterns are repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “Science…” or “People…” as the subject, so the range is not yet consistently varied. There are also a few awkward constructions, such as “can change the way young people think,” whose meaning is unclear in context. Practise varying clause structures and making relationships between ideas grammatically explicit.
