IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The most important objective of science should be to benefit individuals' lives. I completely agree with this statement, and the reasons will be discussed in the upcoming paragraphs.

To begin with, science and technology are very useful in the modern era. Due to science, technology has improved. People got to know about gravity with the help of science. Technology such as mobile phones, television, radio, fridge are very beneficial to individual lives. For example, people can communicate with the help of mobile phones over long distances. Through television, people can get to know about what is happening in the world. It is the responsibility of the government to spend money on science to improve individuals' lives, rather than spending unnecessary money to explore new things.

Furthermore, science can also be used to improve healthcare. Many people suffer from various diseases like malaria, dengue, typhoid, cancer, and diabetes. Science can be useful in curing diseases, especially in a very short time. Instead of spending a significant amount of money to explore space or the ocean, the government should invest in science to improve people's lives. The government can build good healthcare infrastructure, such as hospitals, NGO, and public healthcare, so that people can get better treatment. Moreover, science can also be used to build good roads and better infrastructure in the city, which will be beneficial for the people.

To conclude, science is beneficial to the community in many ways. In the modern era, science has played a major role in improving technology, which can be used to improve the community. Science can also be beneficial in building good infrastructure, such as roads, healthcare, and many more.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that science should benefit people, and the body paragraphs give relevant reasons involving communication, healthcare and infrastructure. These examples address the topic, and the conclusion restates your main view. However, the discussion does not fully explore what makes improving lives science’s most important aim. The examples of phones and television mainly show benefits of technology, while the claim that governments should avoid spending on space or ocean exploration is asserted rather than supported or balanced against possible benefits. The healthcare and infrastructure points are also listed more than explained. Develop fewer examples in greater depth, showing specifically how scientific research leads to these improvements and why they should take priority.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around different benefits, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “To conclude” makes the progression easy to follow. Within paragraphs, examples generally relate to the main point. However, the linking is somewhat mechanical, and several ideas are placed together without showing their precise relationship. For instance, the first body paragraph moves from gravity to household technology and then to government spending, while the second shifts from disease treatment to hospitals and roads. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the paragraph’s central claim. More precise referencing and fewer formulaic transitions would make the argument flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “healthcare,” “infrastructure,” “communicate,” and “diseases,” so the main ideas are clear. There are also some attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “significant amount of money.” However, wording is often repetitive: “science,” “improve,” “people’s lives,” and “good” recur frequently, limiting precision and flexibility. Some collocations are awkward, including “individual lives,” “curing diseases,” and “build good healthcare infrastructure.” “Explore new things” is also vague for this argument. Choose more specific terms and vary repeated expressions—for example, refer to scientific research, public well-being, medical treatment, or investment in research—while checking that combinations sound natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. Subordinate clauses appear in constructions such as “so that people can get better treatment” and “which will be beneficial for the people.” The opening and conclusion are also grammatically controlled. Some errors and awkward constructions remain. In “Technology such as mobile phones, television, radio, fridge are,” the list needs consistent plural forms and clearer agreement; “hospitals, NGO, and public healthcare” also mixes singular and plural forms. “People got to know about gravity” shifts into an unsuitable past form for a general point. Review agreement, articles and plural forms, and use a wider range of accurately controlled sentence patterns to express comparisons and cause-and-effect relationships.
